High School: The Torture Zone

Chapter 10: Cave-Hill Creek

Kat opened her eyes for her first day at Cave Hill Creek. When they had arrived yesterday morning, throats sore from a singing contest that had somehow started up, everyone had been filed into a large room. There, the teachers had introduced them to Tom, who was the man who lived at the camp, and had built it in the first place. The two things that he asked of them, was that they had fun, and secondly, that they didn’t disturb him and his wife, because their house was right near the cabins.

The teachers had allowed the students to choose who was in their cabins, as long as there was ten of them. In Kat’s cabin, there was: Herself, Azie, Hayley, Alice, Lilly, Jane, Amber, Chelsea and Madisson. The teachers didn’t let them pick which platoon they were going to be in though, so that evened it out a bit. Kat was in red platoon, with Jack, Sky, and Brad. Hayley and Azie had both gotten into purple platoon.

When the platoons had been chosen, and Kat had walked over to join the rest of the reds, Jack came up to her. “Why did we have to have you? Why couldn’t we have Hayley or Azie instead?” Despite the fact that he was obviously trying to bait her anger, Kat kept her cool.

“Oh, ok then, I’m sorry. I guess we aren’t friends then.” Kat murmured, sitting down in the position that you would normally see a depressed person use. Jack seemed a bit lost for words.

“I didn’t mean it Kat, I’m fine with having you in our platoon.” He was standing near Kat, but not near enough, just give it a bit more, she thought to herself.

“N-n-no, it’s obvious what you meant.” Kat allowed her hair to fall over her face, and let out a small whimper. Normally, she hated showing any signs of weakness, but this was a special occasion. Sky came over to her, and started rubbing her on the back. He then turned to Jack, who was looking a bit scared. “Look what you’ve done! You made her cry!” Sky yelled at Jack. A small crowd had gathered now. Nothing attracted teenagers like a bit of live drama. Kat waited a bit longer, as Jack took a small step forwards, and stammered, “I-I-I’m really sorry Kat, I swear I didn’t mean-“ He was cut off, as Kat jumped into a crouching position, and swept her leg out, knocking Jack of his feet, and onto his face.

The entire crowd erupted into laughter, as Jack, face flushed with humiliation, struggled to get to his feet. Some teachers were struggling to keep their expressions under control, whilst others were eyeing the scene with disapproval. Some teachers just didn’t know the joy Kat got out of making someone face-plant. It gave her that warm, fuzzy feeling that most people got out of teddy bears, or puppies.

After Kat had helped Jack up (if laughing hysterically in his face, then holding out her hand for him to take, before quickly pulling it away again, then a bit more laughing, then actually letting him grab onto her hand to get up, could be considered helping) the students were dismissed to go and put their stuff in their cabins. Kat found Hayley and Azie, who promptly congratulated her on making Jack eat the carpet. The three girls walked towards the rest of the people that they had chosen to bunk with. The girls were all clustered around cabin number 3, and they were in a heated discussion about who got top bunk. Kat sighed to herself, before pushing her way to the door, then turning around to face everyone. The girls continued fighting, so Kat took a deep breath, “SHUT UP!” She yelled at them. They all turned to her, mouths hanging open. “You guys want to know who gets the top bunks? I say it’s whoever gets to them first!” With that, Kat turned around, opened the door, and sprinted towards the nearest bunk-bed, before vaulting herself (with help from the ladder) onto the top bed.

The girls at the door stood there for a second, looking shocked, before rushing forwards into the room. At first, it was absolute chaos, clothes and pillow cases flying everywhere. Once the beds had been sorted out, bags neatly stacked, and clothes changed and put away, it was a bit better though. The girls settled into their cabin and immediately started talking about the events of the day. Alice, however, had something else on her mind.

“So, you know that Nate guy? He’s in Ms Gambiol’s class, and he is super-hot!” Alice squealed, and was immediately greeted by a chorus of agreement from all the other girls. All the girls, that is, apart from Kat, Azie and Hayley. They stared at each other in dismay. This, is bad, Kat thought to herself, Alice normally gets the guy she wants. Suddenly Kat felt a surge of determination surge through her. Well, if the guy she wants is Nate, then we’re just going to have to change her mind.

After the day’s activities, Kat asked Hayley and Azie to meet her at the back of the oval. When they arrived, Kat wasted no time in telling them her dilemma. “We need to find Alice another interest, or getting Holly and Nate together might be harder than we first thought!” Hayley looked horrified,

“But Holly and Nate would be so good together!” She cried. Kat nodded,

“I completely agree with you, but if Alice likes him, then Nate and Holly will never have any time alone. Alice will always be hanging around him, talking to him, flirting with him, and never giving him a chance to even look at Holly. We need to take action.” Kat put her hand out, and without hesitation, Hayley and Azie put theirs in as well.

The mission had just officially started.
