"Jacob!" I sobbed, and collapsed onto the edge of the volcano's mouth. "Jacob!"
He crashed onto a tiny piece of rock, and lay frozen, an arm jerking scarily, before the molten liquid bubbled slowly over him. I screamed and burst into louder tears.
Zach came and wrapped his arms around me, and Farro squeezed my shoulder, staring into the lava.
"Jacob," I trembled, turning around and burying my head into Zach's chest. His t-shirt, which muffled my cries, began to soak from my tears as well as the rain.
"Shh, Lib, it's ok, it's ok," Zach murmured, stroking my damp hair. I carried on shaking, feeling colder each second.
"We should go back," Farro said quietly to Zach, who nodded, and picked me up like a baby. I had a headache and was shivering to death.
"Let's go."
I closed my eyes in pain as they began carefully heading down the volcano. They'd stop every few minutes to catch their breath and hand me over to the other. After a while, with Farro, I began sniffing and shivering so much that he ended up taking off his jacket and wrapping it around me.
"Thanks," I whispered, feeling dead.
"No problem," he answered through gritted teeth. I knew without his jacket to keep him warm, the cold was biting him, and I felt guilty, but when I offered it back he shook his head.
I fell asleep during the journey, but was woken up by a clap of thunder once we were just outside the hut. Zach grunted and put me on the ground when he saw me peeking at him through my eyelashes.
Ok, I admit it.
I was fake sleeping after we got to the bottom of the volcano.
Happy now?
I just lost a little boy who I'd grown extremely fond of. I think I'm allowed to be in this mood.
I sighed and groggily got up. Brenda was waiting at the entrance, looking worried. She pulled me inside after seeing my pale bluish face and settled me onto the sofa with a hot water bottle, blanket and tea.
"You two get to bed," she wagged a finger at Zach and Farro. "Liberty will tell me what happened."
Once I told her the story, I had a sip of the very sweet tea, and looked up at her. I couldn't help crying again.
"Oh love, don't," Brenda croaked in a broken voice, then burst into tears with me. We both hugged, crying the whole time, for a few minutes, before Abbily, Queen of Sympathy came into the room.
"You didn't find him?" she asked, looking around. I hiccuped a sob and Brenda squeezed me.
"They did, just not..." she trailed, tears streaming down her face. She then blew her nose with a tissue from the box on the coffee table and handed me one too.
"Alive," I finished, wiping my red eyes. "He fell into that stupid volcano."
Abbily tutted. "His fault, in my opinion. Who on earth wanders into a volcano?" she sighed, plopping onto the other sofa with her hairbrush. "Well, at least we didn't like him that much."
I blinked at her through my blurry vision. Then I felt myself getting angry.
I was gonna burst.
But this time, I didn't care.
"What the heck do you think you're saying!" I screamed at her. "Idiot! Are you that cold? Soulless witch! Get out of here before I ruin your hideous face!"
I scrunched my hands into fists and ripped off the blanket, charging towards her. Fright briefly flickered on her face for a second, but she contained herself and replied haughtily,"you can't talk to me like that, b-"
Whack!
Before I knew it I had slapped her face. She screeched and leapt away from me, clutching her cheek.
"Freak!" she hissed, then stormed out.
"Oh no," Brenda cried miserably. "Everything's going wrong!"
I breathed heavily, my chest rising and falling fast.
"S-sorry," I trembled, as realisation hit me.
What did I just do?
My knees buckled and I slammed onto the ground, shaking and sobbing hard.
"Stop, Liberty, it's not helping," Brenda said, then somehow managed to get me onto the sofa.
"Look, love...I...I think I know why he ended up on the volcano," she mumbled, tucking her hair behind her ears.
I stared at her.
"Jacob was extremely epileptic. He told me that when I was preparing him some supper before. He must have had an attack and wandered onto-"
"You're telling me this now?" I snapped. "Why not before, when it would have made more sense to keep a closer eye on him? You know what, just leave it." I stood up and roughly pushed her out the way. I know I was being mean but whatever. Too much stuff was happening and the weights on my shoulders were only getting heavier.
"Liberty..."
"Stop. You're useless, both of you. Farro's ok. In fact, he's amazing. If only you two had his genes," I sighed dramatically, almost entering the room we were in after our crazy allergy attack. "But oh, look, you don't."
I stepped into the room then and slammed the door. Then I dropped down against it and sobbed my heart out.
Everything's going wrong. Nothing ever goes my way!
I hugged my knees and cried into my arms.
Death played too many games with everyone I loved. I was his opponent, struggling to keep them.
I always lost.
I always lost.
I always lost.
I always...
My neck rolled forward as I fell asleep.
I dreamed about Jacob and the volcano.
No.
I dreamed about Jacob in the volcano.
Oh, how I miss my boring life.------
