The Impossible

It was a tuesday, I still remember it like it was yesterday. The sounds of screaming and gushing water are pinned in my head, I can never get rid of these horrid sounds no matter how hard I try.

I was at my house listening to music on the radio when a deep voice sounded through the speakers. He spoke of a flood that was going to run straight through Old Town Bowie. The only problem was that I lived in Old Town Bowie.

I ran downstairs to worn my family but they were gone. Their gone? They wouldn't leave me here right? I thought to my self as I wandered around the house searching for my parents. "Mom? Dad?" I screamed through the house. Tears streams down my cheeks as I fell to my knees and thought my world was over. I was alone in my house not knowing what to do. How could my parents leave me here, had I done something wrong? I thought that through for a little while before realizing that I needed to get out of town as soon as possible. I ran upstairs to my room and grabbed everything I needed for leaving town. I grabbed a flashlight, extra clothes, some canned food and money for the trip. I packed it all in a backpack and left my house. I never knew if I was ever going to see my parents again. As I walked around town I saw nothing no birds chirping, no squirrels rattling in the trees nothing. The town was deserted.

I looked ahead to see a long winding road before me. Heading up a large hill, at the top I could see tiny shining dots, cars? I knew thats the way I had to go. I started walking up the hill, I never stopped for a drink or something to eat. I knew if I stopped I would regret it later. As I neared the top of the hill where cars were still sitting I looked at my watch to see what time it was, it was 11:57 at night but I continued my short walk to the hilltop.

At the top of the hill I turned around and looked down, the water was coming over the hills from the other side of the town. That made me jump a little bit, fear crossed my face as I saw my town turn to nothing but rubble. Even though all I wanted to do was sit there and watch the flood do it's destruction, but I had to find my parents. I was just a few feet away from all the cars. When I stared walking by them, the people inside them watched me with a look of terror on their faces. Just keep walking I told myself.

I walked by cars for what seemed like hours looking for my parents. One by one I was disappointed when the faces in the cars were not my parents. After looking in the widows of about fifty cars I saw someone that looked familiar, it was my best friend April and her parents. I went up to the window and knocked on it and at the same time I burst out in tears. April opened the backed door and asked me if I wanted to come in. When I was in the back of the car Aprils mother asked me what had happened I told her that my parents had left me at my house and I had to walk all the way up the hill to save myself from the flood. As much as I was glad to see a familiar face I had to find my parents no mater what. I said goodbye to my friend and started again walking through the line of cars. An hour later I thought I had lost all hope of finding my parents when I saw a green Nissan Armada. "Wait we own a green armada, MOM! DAD!" I screamed. I ran to the drivers seat to see my dad driving and my moms eyes full of tears. I banged on the window, when my mom and dad looked I saw pure joy spread across their faces. Our reunion was cut short when people came running and screaming. "RUN RUN!" A women screamed as she was running. I could hear the water coming, the whooshing and crashing of the water overpowered the screams of the people. "Mom Dad we have to leave now, the water is coming!" I told my parents. At that moment they got out of the car and started running along with me. It wasn't to long until the cars where they had been sitting were sucked into the powerful water that was chasing us.

The water was at my heels but I never stopped running. In just a few short minutes, there were less people running. My first guess was that they had succumbed to the water's force. When I reached a high enough point where I was towering above the flood, I was able to stop and come to my senses. When I looked around to see if there were other survivors, I only saw 6 people none of which were my parents or my best friend. I fell onto my knees and cried realizing I would never live a normal life again.

It is ironic how when you think all your life you are never going to lose your whole life in one day, well that is exactly what happened to me when my town was struck by a flash flood. 207 people died that day in the Old town of Bowie, including my best friend and her parents along with my parents. I have never been in such a horrible place before, when the people around me were dying and I could do nothing about it. The memories of that dreadful day are poison to me, I sometimes think to myself, why not me?
