I woke up to the sound of my phone ringing. With my eyes half open I struggled to reach my crazily vibrating phone on the bedside table. I read the name flashing on the screen and mentally face palmed myself but nevertheless, I hit the green answer button.
"Dhruv Mehta. You better have a good reason to call me in the middle of the night and disturb my beauty sleep." I said, looking at the digital clock on the table to see what time it was. Pretty late for a phone call.
"Aaayyy !!! Princess Esha Saigal." He mocked from the other end. Considering his enthusiasm, I knew he was drunk out of his mind.
"How high are you?" I asked monotonously. Still half asleep.
"Just enough to keep me sane and happy." He responded merrily.
I knew him too well to know what his 'just enough' consisted of- a whole pack of Marlboro hard, a quarter or two of old monk and maybe even a joint. For the past year or so Dhruv had turned from a cool kid to a full time stoner. A jawline that once made girls swoon was now just mandible with a layer of skin. His honey brown eyes that I'd been lost in, once upon a time, had now lost their sparkle and were now bloodshot almost always. Times changed and so did his habits and priorities. And in this course of one year he had lost a lot, right from his weight to his near and dear ones. Almost a year and a half from now Dhruv and I had ended our five months long happy-sad relationship. Reason? It had always been complicated! But, even after break up we had remained friends, not because we were two mature adults who know how to deal with their ex's but mostly because we had been friends since childhood. Back when we started dating, was just the beginning of his stoner phase. The beginning of self destruction ,the beginning of our end. And then eventually, as he lost his senses he lost his loved one's too.On the other side, I could hear the trucks passing by.
"Where are you? Are you alone?"
"Ah, the concern!" He scoffed from the other end, the way he said it was in the most sarcastic and bitchiest tone he could say it in.
"I am with Sahil by the way." He replied before I could react to his sarcasm. But I did not let it go.
"What is your problem dude?" I asked him, now losing my temper.
"Problem? Me? No. I'm fine." Every time he said he was fine, he was as fine as Ross from F.R.I.E.N.D.S when Rachel and Joey date.
"Oh shut up!
"What? Can't a call a friend when I want to?" This time it was sincere.
"What's wrong?" I asked him knowing something was majorly wrong for him to call me while drunk and while Sahil was around.
Sahil Seth was the opposite of Dhruv. He was tall, fair and handsome with six packs and well defined cuts. He spent most of his time gyming, reading and balancing between his best friend Sachi and girlfriend Tistha. Sahil too was our childhood friend. The thing was, Sahil, Dhruv, Krutika - Dhruv's younger sister, Aahana, Karan, Aayan, Daniel, my elder brother - Nakul and I had been born and raised in the same small town almost 300km from our current college. Our parents and their parents had been friends since they were kids, had grown up together and lived there in the same town since forever and so had we. We were all a couple years, at max, younger or elder to each other. And as we grew up one by one we were all sent away to the same place for further studies. Sahil lived with granny alone. His parents had left him here with her and moved to the US when he was just six for reasons unknown. And since then, Sahil was taken care of, partly by my parents and partly by his granny or dadi as we all called her and were an equal part of our family.
