Pledge From Plight
The sun sat low over Deephaven, silhouetting the invading ships as they sailed in.
"Mother, Aevan is still out there!" The little girl at the docks tugged at her mother's skirt, pointing.
A small fishing boat lay ahead of the approaching warships.
"Don't worry," the woman replied, stroking her daughter's hair, "father will take good care of him."
Worry did tinge her own eyes, though. Aevan, her firstborn, was out fishing for the first time.
The battleship at the helm, a man-o'-war, did not change its course. It would ram the small fishing boat, an insignificant obstacle.
"Aevan!" the little girl cried from the docks.
"Jump!" the mother shouted across the long stretch of water. As the man-o'-war struck the boat, she saw two figures leap into the sea: Aevan and his father.
At the same moment, lightning struck. Two flickering lightning bolts hit the two at sea, and then a flurry of flashes struck the people at the docks. Each bolt trained on a beating heart, the entire crowd was slain.
Dressed in the red robes of warfare, the Crusader Chaplain stepped over the charred bodies of his Elemental doing.
"Good," he mused. "They are wholly unprepared. Deephold will soon fall."
After the Crusaders of the Egregore had disembarked and moved on, Deephaven was left in ruins, lifeless. The ships lay anchored at sea.
Then the water rippled.
A disheveled boy crawled to the shore.
The boy found the burnt remains of his mother and younger sister, and cradled them both in his arms. Eyes blackened by Umbra Oil, his Power in the Aether Element a well-kept secret, he whispered:
"Sea priest, I will find you again. And you will pay." Tears rolling from his coal-colored eyes, Aevan could still see the Chaplain before his inner eye, in the Egregore.
"Before you die, priest, I will rip your mind apart."
