Looking left to right several times, I observed my surroundings, searching for any sign of nearby humans. The forest surrounding my home was silent and empty, with the occasional twitter of a robin who just awoke from it's quiet slumber. I stared at the robin with it's bright red chest and thought, when will I be able to fly away from this cruel life?
Finally reaching the end of my daily check, I slowly stepped out of the translucent, magical barrier into the real world of non-magical creatures.
It was an irritating task to do, checking for people passing nearby, but I couldn't help it. If anybody--and I mean ANYBODY--were to find my whereabouts, there'd be a majorly huge commotion about how I lived in 'the middle of nowhere' and everybody would try to pass through the barrier (which I knew was impossible, but it'd still start unreasonable competitions for who can get through the magical wall). Not that people would know it's magical, but I can't risk the chance of them finding out.
Yes, I am a magical being, commonly referred to as a witch. Not like the warty, old witches that you'd find in children's fairytales, but more like a human, born with magical powers of infinite use. It's difficult being me, as I have to keep countless numbers of secrets, hide my true identity, and place magical barriers over my own house. And even though I know it's for my safety, I truly wish for a day where humans and witches could live together in peace, just like the old times...
The quiet morning relaxed me a little as I swiftly walked up the tree covered hill to the cobblestone pathway leading towards my school. My footsteps hardly made any sounds as they travelled up the steep slope, dodging the trees and low bushes that may alert others of my presence.
Once I reached the stone path, I darted behind a nearby tree and waited. Two girls from my grade, Melissa and Genevieve, strolled past me without a care in the world, gossiping about a new kid that's starting school today.
"So what was his name again?" Genevieve asked while curling her golden locks.
Melissa tilted her head, "I think it was... Kyle?"
Kael, I quietly corrected in my head as the girls kept on giggling.
"I wonder if he's good looking..." Melissa pondered.
"You think?" Genevieve frowned a little, "The name Kyle doesn't really sound very, you know, cool."
"We'll just have to find out," Melissa ran ahead with her long brown-blonde ponytail wildly bouncing behind her.
Laughing the whole way, Genevieve sprinted in order to catch up to one of our best athletes.
Creeping along the tree's thick trunk, I scanned the area, gazing left to right numerous times before I lept over the metal rail that fenced along the path. Then, after turning towards the school's direction, I set off like I'd been walking along this pathway the whole time. As usual.
My classes at school were a little different to everyone else's... Well, at least not everything was different. Besides me having my own personal classroom (since I learn how to increase my spell's power and such), having seperate lunch areas, and having an uncanny relationship with my teacher, my school life is no different to any others... Sort of.
Mr.Drake, my teacher, is the only single human being in this world who actually knows what I really am. Partly because he knew my parents, but the real reason he's been keeping this secret, is because he owes both my parents his life.
It was a long while ago when it happened--I'd only just turned one. My parents were taking me out for a stroll through the forest, when Mr.Drake appeared before them.
He was being chased by an old but powerful wizard, with a long, royal blue coat lined with golden strips of delicate silk. He was furiously shooting enchanted arrows from his fingertips, which glowed a bright yellow aura.
My parents rushed to Mr.Drake's side, with my mother's eyes switching from the wizard, to Mr. Drake's right arm, where a bloody cut was slowly oozing down, sliding all the way to his dirty fingertips before dripping onto the dry, leaf-covered soil.
The wizard eyed my father with his bright, blue eyes, observing his every motion. Every breath that he took was being calculated in the old warts brain.
The horrifying wizard struck, ferociously lunging towards both my parents, before...
I shook my head, erasing the tragic memory from my brain. Relax Jeanette, I urged myself, that was twelve years ago.
