"A months' worth of clothes?" Bev reads aloud.
"Check."
"Phone, charger, etcetera?"
"Check." A devilish grin paints Bev's lips.
"Lingerie so you can get dirty?" she chides.
I drop my over stuffed suitcase hard onto the cherry wood floors as my chafing eyes shoot daggers at my best friend. "For the last time," I chastise, "This is a high school field trip, not some...sexcapade!"
She casually tosses her long red locks over one shoulder. "Suit yourself. Your decision." The room splits with an uncomfortable silence as I reach for my bag. "Are you sure about—?"
"—Yes," I interrupt.
"C'mon, Reese, You'll be missing out. The guys in Rome are so hot. Really." Bev looks so confident, sure of herself, but there's no way will I listen to Bev and her bad ideas.
"Again, we aren’t there for the hot guys. Maybe we'll come back after college and you'll get to do whatever. But this is a field trip." Bev had always been like this, so ready to experience all there was to experience. She matured mentally faster than her body could keep up, putting her one step ahead of everyone else. I remember in fifth grade she was the only girl who would wear mascara in the whole class.
For as long as I can remember, Bev has been my best friend. We met in kindergarten, when a boy, who just happened to be my twin brother, had called her 'carrot top' and she bit his arm so hard her loose tooth got stuck in his flesh. I was rather mad at my brother for telling me I looked dumb in pigtails and thought he deserved it, so I held him down as Bev took a chunk out of him. We bonded in timeout and have been the best of friends since.
"After College? After college is five years away! And probably longer for a nerd like you. You'll be in college until you're like thirty!"
"Grad's school is only two years, Bev. That means I'll be out when I'm twenty four." I know Bev didn’t give a crap about that, but I say it anyways just to prove her wrong in any way I can. She motions her hand out as if asking for spare change.
"My point exactly."
"Can we get back to the list now? What else is there to pack?" My whole social studies class offers an optional summer trip to the cities of Italy to learn about culture. It took a lot of convincing to get my mom to fork up five thousand dollars for the journey, but after promising to wash the baseboards, she broke her restraint and let the money flood out of her bank account. I wouldn’t have even asked to go in the first place if it wasn't for Bev's constant begging. If I didn’t go, she would have to bunk with Maryland South, and God forbid that. Jace, my twin, was the next to ask mom to cough up the cash. After all, if I was going, he thought it'd be unfair if he couldn't. So five thousand more dollars leaked from mom's wallet and here we are now, packing the night before we leave due to my serious procrastination.
"Well, I packed a bunch of snacks, so you don’t need to worry about that…oh, bring soda." She jams another spoonful of peanut butter into her mouth to punctuate her sentence. It always amazed me how much he can eat and never gain weight. Bev is the most petite person I know, only being five feet tall. I feel like a monster in comparison, towering over her at five foot four.
