What are you doing?"

The sharpness in the strangely familiar voice startled me. I turned around and saw a woman walking towards me. I stood frozen as she grabbed my arm and yanked me up to my feet.

"Tell me it isn't true. What in the world are you thinking?"

"Mother, I-I..."

"I could have expected this from your sister but not from you. This is black magic, Iris."

I felt a horrible sinking feeling in my stomach at disappointing the woman in front of me. Why? Why was it that it was like this? Being caught doing magic meant an immediate death sentence. After helping the sick people would still be willing to burn every witch alive.

"Do you know what is happening in Salem?" The woman was gathering the scattered bones and hers that lay on the ground. "They are killing our sisters. Do you want them to kill us too? Think, Iris."

"I am thinking, mother. We do so much for these people and for what? Do you know what they say about us? I had to fight off Sir Bolton for trying to kiss my sister against her will. You won't let us use our full magic. Think of what we can do-"

The sharp slap echoed throughout the quiet of the trees. It was so hard my head whipped to the side. It stung my cheek where her hand had made contact.

"We only use what we should. You know that." The woman said sternly. "What has gotten into you? Not just you, your sister has been acting out of all sorts lately. It's that Devereux fellow isn't it? You are not to see him, Iris. Do you understand me? You will not see Kane Devereux."

"Blaire?"

My eyes slowly opened when I heard my name being called. Where was I? The last thing I remembered was sitting in class and...and what? I couldn't understand what was happening to me. What was that dream even about? Something was happening to me and I didn't know what.

"Blaire, are you okay?"

I looked to my right and saw my mom sitting next to me. When had she gotten here?

"Mom?"

She sighed in relief. "Blaire, what happened to you?" She asked.

"I-I don't remember."

"Is she awake?"

My mom looked over her shoulder and I felt her entire body tense. Mr. Glaser stood there with a worried expression on his face.

"Yes. I'm taking her to the hospital."

I groaned. Why did my mom have to be so dramatic all the time. She could just use magic to make me feel better or whip up a potion. Why she thought I needed to go to the hospital was beyond me.

"I don't need to go to the hospital, mom." I said.

"Blaire, you fainted. I just want to make sure-"

"Mom, please don't make a big deal. I felt lightheaded, no biggie. Besides, I think I skipped breakfast. That's probably what made me feel lightheaded."

"She's fine, Elise. I caught her before she hit the floor. She's been cleared by the nurse." Mr. Glaser said.

My mom was so quick at turning her dagger eyes at him. I was impressed that he didn't crumble under my moms fury. She meant business and I wasn't sure if I was going to get out of this one, even with Mr. Glaser's help.

I was sure that even if my mom got her way I wouldn't be held at the hospital. I still needed to meet Camille and meet her mom. The idea of being around Camille and the person who gave birth to her was unsettling, but I had to find out what everyone was trying to hide from me.
