"Look Natsu, a rainbow. It's so beautiful!" Lucy softly whispered almost to herself, causing the dozing, salmon-haired dragon slayer to stir and let out a low moan as he shifted.
"Oh Natsu, I'm so sorry, I didn't notice you had fallen asleep. I'm sorry." He chuckled which turned into a wince as his hand fled to his abdomen. Lucy gave him a sympathetic look as she tried desperately to think of something to do for her best friend.
He noticed her look and immediately smiled,
"Really, it's not that bad, maybe a little painful when I move but honestly I've definitely had worse." His smiled faded a little as he noticed that she made his lie transparent. She looked at the opening of the cave the sunset's light outlining her figure, Natsu could tell even without a perfect view that she had tears streaking her rosy cheeks. He reached for her hand and held it gently, stroking her soft, but dirty skin. Lucy turned her face back to him, smiling.
"You seriously are amazing Natsu. Do you realize that you are honestly in the worst situation right now? Injuries covering your body, the musty air surrounding you possibly causing breathing problems, help goodness knows how far away and stuck with someone. . .who is so utterly useless!" Her smile had completely faded by the end of that statement. Natsu's grin only grew.
"Do you realize that this is not the 'worst' situation? I could have gotten both legs and arms eaten, I could have sprouted wings and then I'd be a limbless flying body, THEN that'd be terrifying-- no wait, that sounds hilarious! OH! or you could have gotten only your clothes eaten and you'd be running around naked while I'm a flying limbless slab of meat!! oh man, can you imagine if Happy's fish could have been eaten! HEAVEN FORBID!" He yelled out the last part as if he were afraid for his life.
Lucy was overtaken by uncontrollable laughter and keeled over from her knees to the side of her body. Seconds passed into minutes which turned into hours as Natsu continued to keep Lucy's spirits up while he knew full well that the dreadful, ever-growing pain in his chest was going to be a nerve-wracking ordeal Lucy would have to deal with, eventually. But he would fight that future as much as humanly possible before it all crushed her happiness.
Her smile and her laugh were the only things that Natsu needed to help him through his war.
