You lie in bed. You're awake, but you occasionally nod off at times. The covers are up to your neck, and you're starting to sweat from the heat built in. But for some odd reason, you don't want to take off the covers. You feel safe wrapped inside the warmth that surrounds you. If you take them off, you'll feel exposed, and not safe. But why? Is it because you're scared of the things that go bump in the night? You laugh mentally, shrugging it off. You're not scared. Nothing scares you. Until you hear something. A small bump like sound catches your attention. It sounds fairly close, but it's not in your room. You instantly fall motionless, holding your breath. Again, you hear a bump. Now, you're not only sweating from the heat, but now your sweating from the dread, and fear boiling inside you. You try to calm yourself down, passing the noises off as just the wind, or your cat just moving around, but you can't shake it off entirely. You close your eye sand imagine things that make you happy, but darkness engulfs your mind, and your back into your state of fear. Because of this, you shrink under the covers and hold them tighter against you. I'll be safe as long as I stay quiet ,and stay hidden. You tell yourself that repeatedly, and after a bit, you feel better. You haven't heard any more bumps, and noises, so it was probably just your cat. But something...something still is staying with you, keeping you awake. You finally build up the courage, let your covers slide down, and fall asleep. But about a minute later, another noise gets too you. It sounds even closer, and now your doubting it's your cat. He can't make a noise that close..can he? Once more, your huddling against your covers, even covering your head. It goes silent again. You dare to uncover your head and look out. Nothing. Except for your door. It's open by a small crack. Your door was closed. Wasn't it? At that moment your cat jumps up on your bed, and gives off a soft purr at the sight of you. Relieved, you turn to your side to pet him. It was him all along. Your fear is now fully gone. You let yourself fall asleep, your cat beside you.

You wake up in a cold sweat. You probably had a nightmare or something. Taking the covers off, you notice your cat is gone. He probably left for the bathroom. Getting up, you stagger a bit, but soon find your balance. Walking towards the bathroom, you switch the light on and cringe. You wait for your eyes to get used to the light, and walk over to the sink. Turning the sink on, you take a nearby on,and cringe. You wait for your eyes to get used to the light, and walk over to the sink. Turning the sink on, you take a nearby wash cloth, and dampen it with cold water. Patting your face, you stare into the mirror for a bit before walking out, and turning the light off. Making your way back to the bed, you glance at the clock. 12:45.. Hmm.. You ponder a bit, surprised that it's only 12:45. Shaking your head, you crawl back in bed, and give off a sigh. Closing your eyes, you drift to sleep again. Like before something disturbs you. You hear something like footsteps. Your the only one in this house. Technically apartment. Your cat can't be making those noises clearly. Still, you lie in bed, eyes wide. If there was someone in the house, your cat would've done something. Meow, or start a ruckus of sorts. But you only hear a distant sound of footsteps.
