Prologue
The last hug of the season was handed out to a lonely girl living in an imperfect world. She walked back to her group with a somber look on her face, she was now 16, how could she handle human interaction once every three years? When she was younger it was fine, being hooked up to the simulators with nannybots to take care of her. But they were not real, not human. With them she could not be sarcastic or witty or a straight up bitch without getting a: “I do not understand your request, please say it again.”
Humans were rare creatures, held in ‘captivity’ and only allowed to see each other once every three years, if they were lucky. Most days they were hooked up to huge machines in a bright white room while their dreams were monitored for patterns, unknown to them but they were being used as experiments for the nanobots to figure out how to embed emotions into their coding.
Rosaline was one of the few remaining humans, or so she thought, she had seen the same boy once every three years for one day all her life. The bots told her it was her scientifically chosen mate, but she didn’t understand most of the stuff that came out of their speakers. Rosaline had never seen the inside of a school, and had never learned how to write or read complex sentences. The bots kept it that way.
All she knew is that every blue moon she was allowed to see him, Daunte. On their days together they would sit and talk for hours, never leaving each other’s arms. For they knew that the little time they had together wouldn’t last long before they were locked back into a dream simulation surrounded by bots.
Together they would thumb wrestle, tease, and play tag (when they were younger) and hold hands, hug, and occasionally Eskimo and cheek kiss (when they got older). Together they were figuring out the world in each other’s arms, their own little paradise where they could escape the monotony of their dreary lives.
Since the last time they saw each other, Daunte had shot up like a bean pole, going from 5’8 to 6’. His voice had deepened and rarely ever cracked in the adorable way it did before, and his eyes had become a deeper shade of blue, almost what could be considered in the old world as sea green. The only thing that remained the same was his personality and his chocolate brown skin.
Rosaline had also changed drastically since the last time he saw her. She had gone from being a 5’6 shorty to being 5’10. Her hair had grown longer and the natural waves flowed out like incoming tide, her eyes had developed small forest green freckles in a sea of deep blue. Her breasts had majorly increased in size over the years, going from an A cup to a C cup. And her slightly tan white skin had remained the same.
A fond look crossed her face as she was lead back into the dream room, reminiscing every moment she had spent with her best friend, 1,095 days to go, she thought....
