I am now 16. Dad still worries that WICKED will find me. They won't. They didn't find me when I snuck into their vent system and stole a vial of serum when I was 11. They won't find me when I lead the attack on the Last City.
Dad took in a WICKED subject a few weeks ago. We found him with a spear in his chest. The entire time we were raiding the outside of that maze, I was laughing at the stupidity of the teenagers who were in there. If only they knew what their lives meant. One of those kids could save Dad.
"Y/N?" I feel a tap on my shoulder. I turn around to see Gally, the kid from WICKED, standing behind me, bandages slightly showing from under his shirt.
"Hey Gally. How's that healing?" I say, pointing at his chest.
"Still kinda sore," he sheepishly says. I smile. I haven't smiled in a while.
"We found you in time. Just remember that," I tell him.
"I know." An awkward silence surrounds us before I go back to work on the explosives.
"Y/N!" I hear Dad call. I stand up, Gally steps behind me. He's still getting used to the lucid crank that is my father.
"What's up, Dad?" I ask. He strolls in, an iv of serum in his arm. I sigh. "I told Robert to help you with the bag," I say in an annoyed tone. Dad shrugs it off.
"I got news. Probably related to your maze friends, Gally." Gally straightens his back.
"What about them?"
"WICKED is planning something big. Apparently they found the Right Arm. Destroyed their entire base."
"How many captured?" I ask.
"All escapees except for maybe a handful." I sigh.
"Do you know who wasn't captured?" Gally asks.
"Our inside man is working on getting full damage reports but since WICKED has most of the latest tech, it may take days before any real news."
"Those damn rats," I scold. I cross my arms and sigh. Gally rubs my shoulder, showing comfort in a subtle way. Even though Dad wants to see little me's running around before the serum isn't enough anymore and the Flare takes over.
"I need to see the docs," Gally says before walking away. He pats my shoulder and shakes hands with Dad before leaving. I sigh before returning to the explosives.
"So..." Dad begins. "Anything there?" I look to him and start laughing. He gives me a look. "What? He's a nice, young man."
"I love you Dad but I barely know him and I don't know. I'm not in that stage of my life yet," I say as I continue fiddling with the gadgets on my desk.
"Y/N, you deserve to find happiness," he says softly.
"And you deserve a cure." I touch a live wire by accident and squeal out in pain. Dad immediately checks for an open wound. WICKED has been making announcements of a possible airborne version of the Flare so he's been really careful.
"Dad I'm okay," I say in a reassuring tone.
"You know you haven't been tested for immunity. We don't know how your body will react!" He says anxiously. I rub his shoulders with my thumbs. It always calms him down when his temper acts up.
"It's okay," I hug him tight. We stay like this for a few minutes.
"We need to find you a cure. Not just some medication that slows it down."
"I'll be ready when I'm past the Gone."
"I won't."
"You'll make due just fine," he says as he goes to kiss my cheek. I sigh, a sad smile painted on my face. He walks away, medical machinery rolling with him. I sigh and wipe few tears before returning to the devices.
