Prompt:
You are told that you are going to walk into a room one person who wants to kill you and two people who would do anything to save you. Inside you find your two best friends and your crush!!!
Who to trust!!!
"Mandie there are three people behind those doors. One wants to kill you and two would do anything save you. I don't know which is which so don't ask." I nodded. I had no idea how much my heart would strain for a very long time. The men on my left gave me a knife and the one on my right gave me a half smile. I'm sure it was meant to be reassuring but it just made my stomach churn. The three people behind the door were not who I thought they would be. The man on my left snatched the knob and roughly shoved me in the room. I looked up from my fallen spot on the white tiled floor. The sight caused my stomach to clench. My best friends Ashley Cole and Kayla Meckar. They were a possibility in my mind. Then my eyes locked with my childhood best friend. Brett Kolme. My mind raced. Did he know I liked him? Did he hate me for it? I looked away before I cried. Ashley sat in the corner tear stained face rose to meet my sight. I ran and hugged her tight to comfort her. She squeezed me back tightly.
"Oh Mandie I'm worried about that boy over there. What he could possibly hate you for." She whispered.
"His name is Brett Kolme and we used to be best friends when we were little."
"That doesn't answer why he could hate you. You the most amazing person on the planet." She whispered even more fearfully. Kayla was sitting in a chair on her phone. Even though she thought I didn't see she glanced over at Brett. She looked at him like he was a prize to be won. The fear washed over me like I was hit by a giant wave in the ocean and lost control.
"It's not Brett, Ashley." I said aloud. I didn't care if he heard me. Brett looked up at me.
"Please tell me you didn't really think I hated you cause I don't and absolutely not enough to kill you." Ashley looked between each person in the room.
"But Kayla and I are her besties. We would do anything for Mandie and as I've heard you haven't been around for a while. So what's your excuse?" I leaned back against the wall, curled into a ball and just let the tears flow. Ashley and Brett were arguing still when Kayla got up, grabbed my arm and dragged me to the other side of the room. I screamed. The two of them stopped arguing long enough to realize what was happening. Kayla pulled the knife out of my pocket and started bawling.
"Brett was supposed to be mine. He wasn't supposed to like Mandie. Ashley you never payed attention to me long enough to realize we liked the same guy." Kayla held the knife to my throat. The tears stained her face. She stopped looked at me and dropped my arm. Brett's face plastered with pain and fear. Ashley looked like she was going to scream but was too frightened to let any sound out of her mouth.
"Leave her alone Kayla." Brett's hands shook like they were the earth in a earthquake. Fear could not win. I didn't care whether she hurt me as long as she didn't hurt them. Kayla had all of our lives on the line.
"I'm sorry Brett we will see each other again someday." She held the knife up to throw it. I dove at her as she threw it. It missed it's target and hit his shoulder. A scream touched his lips but barely made it out. Kayla's head hit the floor. It hit it hard enough to knock her out or so I thought. Ashley screamed tears streaming down her face. She crawled over to Brett and held him up till I got over there.
"Brett! I'm so sorry this had to happen." He winced in pain.
"It's not your fault Mand." He grabbed my hand. At which I burst into tears.
"I know but...I know I could have prevented this." I wept. He wiped away the tears that fell down my cheek.
"Mand there was nothing you could have done that you didn't do already." He sucked in a breath. Kayla sat up and pulled a small gun from her back pocket.
"MANDIE." She looked up and saw Kayla pull the trigger. She dove in the way but it wasn't soon enough to have it miss her. Instead of the heart it hit her in the stomach. "ASHLEY."
"Mandie." Ashley groaned. "Brett.." Her eyes glossed over and that sent me over the edge. I turned around.
"She's gone." Kayla had the gun pointed at Brett.
"You'll know how I felt to have the guy I liked taken right out of my hands. It's the same as the kids who got toys taken from them in the preschool we helped out at." I got up and stood between them. Brett squirmed though the pain in his shoulder was excruciating.
"Mandie Amelie Morris don't even think about putting yourself in danger like that." A sob escaped my lips. Brett's eyes glistened with wet tears. "Brett I'm sorry but I would never forgive myself if she hurt you any more than she already has. I lost Ash I can't lose you too." I choked. I looked back to Kayla.
"Move!! You will feel my pain Mandie. You and Ashley always got what you wanted. Boys, clothes, money, courage. EVERYTHING!!!"
"Courage really?? I'm terrified of a lot of things. I'm afraid of what everyone thinks of me. What you and Ashley thought about me. What Brett thought of me. I have major stage fright. My dad died when I was little. And my mom thinks that buying me more fashionable clothes and things will make me more her. When I met you and Ashley I thought I could be myself for once. Obviously not." Tears were hot on my face. I was angry and broken-hearted. My honey colored hair and green eyes seemed to shine. My face red with tears. Brett's chocolate brown hair and eyes were dark with hurt and anger.
"Kayla leave her alone you can have whatever you want if you swear you'll leave Mandie alone." He tried standing up but had to catch himself on the wall. Kayla set down the gun.
"Anything?" She asked questioningly.
"Yes anything." Brett croaked.
"I'll leave her alone if you forget about her and go out with me." Kayla snapped. "That's the only way that deal can be made."
"Fine. Deal." Brett muttered quietly. "Just give me a minute to talk to her."
"Fine whatever five minutes." She walked to the door giddy with glee. Brett stumbled over to the table where the gun was. I had been sobbing since the deal had been struck. He picked it up and with the last bit of strength remaining in him he pulled the trigger aiming it at Kayla. The bang, then Kayla dropping to the floor, then Brett collapsing sent my head spinning. I fell to the floor and crawled around to the door, yanked Kayla out of the way and screamed for an ambulance. The scream made me light headed. The last thing I remember was everything going fuzzy and then black. Pain had shot straight up my body from my knees. I woke up minutes ago and found myself In a hospital bed with Brett in the bed next to mine. Bandages on his shoulder and tubes and IV's everywhere. A heartbeat monitor tracking a slow paced heartbeat. I tried to get up and weep over him but cords stopped me my heartbeat monitor read a high paced heartbeat. The slap of men's shoes are now coming closer by the minute. The man that entered notices the large difference in heartbeat paces. He goes out in the hall and yells for help. I panic and realize my breath is faster than it should. I try to slow down my breath. Nothing is working. Tears flow painfully down my cheek. A doctor takes out a needle and injects a liquid into my wrist. He whispers to me.
"Adenocor for your heart rate." They inject Brett with something too and in just minutes both of our heart rates are back to normal. I'm extremely exhausted and pass out from the past while. I heard we have been in here for two days. So in the past three days I've had a lot of pain. Ashley's gone, Brett got hurt and Kayla is gone but more painfully important she turned on me. Pain settles in my chest but I push through it and allow sleep to take over. Dreamless sleep.
