56 DAYS BEFORE

I leave work at 6pm sharp carrying a very talkative Noah. He'd been telling his Uncle Fin all about his new police car and how it was faster than his, i had just watched my smile growing as he became more and more animated. All of my paperwork is finished and our case load has been light this week so i am able to leave early.

Although me and Noah will not be going home; thank goodness Amanda took Noah out for burgers at 5, cause the drive to the hospital is taking forever, the traffic is ridiculous. I look up into my rearview mirror and see my innocent baby fast asleep in the back, he is the reason i get up everyday and power through my work, and why my late lights have become less and less.

I pull into the hospital carpark and grab Noah's backpack and blanket before gently pulling him from his carseat. His little head fitting perfectly into the crook of my neck, his even breaths warming my neck and bringing me comfort. I stride down the familliar corridor until i reach her room, i push the door open to see nothing has changed, she's still having a machine breathe for her, the feeding tube still in her nose and the room earily quiet. I lay Noah on the couch by the window, and put his bag on the floor next to him.

I dragged the spare chair and place it next to her bed, i watch her for a few hours before i fall asleep with my head next to her arm on the bed.
