Chapter 13

Jess's POV:

"Morning Gus!" I yell from my front porch while locking the door. He waves back, and I run down to meet him.

"Ready?" he asks.

"Yep." I reply checking my bag once more.

"Doing anything tonight?" asks Gus sticking his hands in the front pockets of his jeans.

"Well actually, I'm going on a date tonight."

I thought he would be happy, but he paled a little when I said this.

"What?" he asked sounding confused.

"I'm going on a date tonight! So, yesterday in eighth period a boy named Leo came up to me and asked me if I was doing anything tonight. I told him I wasn't, and here we are, i'm going to dinner with him. He seems nice and he's cute. Do you know him?"

Gus just looks at the ground and silently kicks around a rock.

"Nope, don't know him." He whispers.

Why is he acting so weird? I mean, he was the one who said we couldn't be any more than friends, so why can't he move on? At least I'm trying to do that...

Augustus's POV:

That statement "I'm going on a date tonight" hit me like a ton of bricks. I was the one to let her go, so I wouldn't have lost her so fast if I would've told her that I wanted to be more than just friends. She's moved on. We can still be friends, but no more. In reality I did know Leo. Not extremely well, but I know that he is popular, but he treats girls well from what I've heard. I could never compete. Maybe she never actually liked me in the first place. Maybe I should move on to.

Jess's POV:

Today has been mostly awkward between Gus and I. He gave me a mumbled goodbye this morning before leaving for his first class and he we've only exchanged small smiles in the hallway. I did sit with Adelyn at lunch and we had a nice time talking and laughing. She did ask me about why Gus wasn't sitting with us like normal. I was completely honest in telling her I had no idea. Was it possible that he's jealous? No, it couldn't be. He was the one who cut off our relationship, not me.

I walked home with him, but it was mostly silent. I was losing my best friend and I didn't even know why.

"Gus? Are you okay?" I finally decide to ask him.

"I'm fine, just fine." He says plastering a very fake smile on his face.

"You know you can tell me if something is up. I'm here to listen you know." I say playfully shoving his shoulder.

"I know, but I'm all good," he says stopping in front of my house, "I hope you have fun with Leo tonight."

"Thanks, I'll see ya tomorrow then?"

"Yep." he says popping the p.

I just finished my homework before there is a knock at the door downstairs. I've got about an hour until I go on my date with Leo, and right now I'm wearing a pair of grey sweatpants, one of my basketball t shirts, my black glasses, and my hair is in a messy bun. I run downstairs and yank open the door to see Adelyn standing there.

"I'm here to help you get ready!" she says smiling. Before I can even say anything she shoves past me and runs up to my room and flops down in the bed.

"So, what do you think you'll wear?" She asks.

"I don't know, I have no idea where he'e even taking me."

"Text him." She says.

I pull out my phone and quick ask him where we are going.

He replies back and tells me that he's taking me to dinner and to dress casual.

"Casual." I say looking back to her.

She immediately jumps of the bed and starts rummaging through my closet.

She comes out with a loose floral print crop top, black high waisted shorts, and a pair of white sandals.

"Here, put this on," she shoves the outfit toward me, "And i'll do your makeup and hair. You need to forget about Augustus and move on girl."

"I was until you said something." I reply rolling my eyes and going to the bathroom.

When Adelyn finally finishes fixing me, I have to admit when I look in the mirror I looked beautiful. I didn't even recognize myself!

All the sudden I hear the doorbell ring and look at the clock. It is time already.

Adelyn gives me a quick hug and tells me good luck before I run down the steps and take a deep breath before opening the door.
