Prologue

Mrs. King discreetly read the letter outlining Addison's scholarship deal. She had never been offered so much money just so her daughter could be enrolled into one of the world's best schools, matter of fact she had never been offered money at all.

Half of her was telling herself this is a joke while the other half was still in a state of shock. It was a simple request, Addison would just attend her upcoming senior year at Conrail Prep, full scholarship and in return, she would be on watch and report her experience there. A social experiment. There was no way a deal like that would just go by.

"You're going Addison," she said cutting the intense silence that had been built in the living room.

"No i'm not mom, they just want to use me as a lab rat!" Addison retorted throwing her hands up in the air in frustration.

"Your tone, young lady. And it's an order, not a decision." Mr. King said sternly looking up from his newspaper. Addison huffed and folded her hands to her chest.

Mrs. King sighed, her facial features softened, "They're offering us a lot of money Addi, you know how desperate we are and an opportunity like this only comes by in a lifetime, if at all." Addison glared at the carpeted ground below her feet and focused on the stain that was harbored there for years. "We could pay off all our debts honey, and still send you to that fancy college you want to go to,".

Addison looked up at her mother wide eyed, "Juilliard?" She asked. Going to Juilliard was Addison's dream. Her passion for music was undeniable as well as her talent.

"Yes Addi, Conrail even has a great music program." Her mom smiled whilst sliding the brochure towards her.

Playing the piano was Addison's passion. As soon as her fingers pressed one key, she would lose control and end up playing the piano full heartedly. She didn't have a piano of her own because she nor parents could never afford it, so she used the one in her school's abandoned music room. For a girl who has never had a piano lesson in her life, she knew more than what an average pianist did.

The King's family wasn't the poorest family but they did have problems paying off their debts and bills. Mr. King was once a construction worker. He had an accident on the job which caused him to be paralysed from the waist down. His lawyers had persuaded him to sue the company since his severe accident happened while he was working which only resulted in them losing the case and leaving Mr. King to pay a grand amount that he now owed his lawyers.

That incident had left the King's broke and deep in debt. Mrs. King was always just a housewife but now she had to get a night job and take care of Mr. King in the day while Addison also had to get jobs so that the bills could be paid and food could be put on the table.

"I guess i'll be going to Conrail in August." She said with a not so exciting voice. The large cash gift and music program had persuaded her but she still was not happy with it.

Mrs. King grinned but it faded as soon as it came when she noticed her daughter's expression was the complete opposite. "How bad could Conrail Academy really be dear?".

As far as Mrs. King had read, the brochure had shown such amenities that could only benefit her daughter. Her current high school could not even compare to Conrail Prep. She thought that Addison would thank her and Mr. King for applying for the first scholarship program there. Addison was very smart with an almost perfect GPA but her daughter had lacked friends and the social skills she would need later down the line. This opportunity could only do great wonders for her daughter. Receiving the cash gift was only a plus.

"A bunch of spoilt kids with hefty trust funds and that only care about their family's and other's net worth doesn't sound appealing to me mom." Addison mumbled looking away from her mother's piercing eyes.

Mrs. King rubbed circle in her daughter's back, "Oh honey, you'll fit in, you're smart and beautiful."

Both statements were true. Addison was a straight A student and was outstandingly beautiful. She had received her mother's auburn coloured hair that was long and curly and her father's bright, lime green eyes. Her nose was small, her cheeks and limps were plump and her eyebrows had a natural arch. She was petite in body structure.

"But i'm not rich, and thats all they care about." She sighed playing with the hem of her sweater, "If I was going to fit in then they wouldn't be using me as a social experiment."

"How about you keep this in mind, what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger." Mr. King interrupted. He had placed his newspaper to the side and was sipping his coffee staring directly into the matching eyes of his daughter, "Don't just do this for them Addi, do it for me. I know you can make it at that school. Can you do that for me?" He asked holding out his hand for Addison to take. He knew that his daughter needed this. He did not want her stuck in their small town just because of his injuries. It was unfair to her.

Addison stared at her father's outstretched hand for awhile before taking it and giving it a light squeeze, "Yes I can."
