People ask me my story. They sit there and stare at me every time they get the chance. They want to know who I am, where I’m from, what I do. They want to know my secrets, my hopes, my dreams. I have nothing. My life is nothing, but trouble after trouble. I’ve survived merely by taking “danger by the horns” as the humans would say. I face things that threaten my life on a daily basis, but I am no mortal. In fact, I find it to be a complete disgrace to even be around them. I haven’t always felt this way. The day that I lost my connection is the day it happened. I lost all faith in anything that deals with humanity and this is my story.

“Wake up my sweet.” A voice as smooth as silk calls out in the darkness. There’s a strong French accent. My body is convulsing violently. I have no control over my arms and legs. What’s going on? A hand touches the top of my forehead. It pushes back the hair from my face. I try to open my eyes, but they are too heavy to lift. Panic sinks in. My breath is getting shallower by the second. Amazingly, I get my lips to move. I utter words that are so quiet you’d have to have super hearing to catch them.
“Wha-at, ddid yy-you ddo to me?” I gasped. My airways seem to close with each word. The hand starts slowly caressing my hair from the front to the crown.
“I only did what you wanted. I gave you a life that will mean more to you in the long run. Shhhhh… The venom is slowly working its way into your blood stream. Soon it will fuse to your DNA. When this happens you will feel some discomfort.” As if on cue, pain shoots through my spine. It travels up and out through each limb. It feels as if it is splintering each individual bone, one by one. I scream out with pain. A warm sensation comes from the hand on my head and everything seems to ease.
The shaking of my limbs slows down. The fog that was in my head clears. Where am I? Who is this man? What is he doing to me? The pain subsides, but my breath still gets weaker and weaker. I can feel my heart beating slower and slower. Suddenly the other questions don’t matter. My eyes open. All I see is a face staring down at me. It’s familiar, but my memory fails me. I raise my hand up to touch the face, but the strength leaves me and it drops back to my side.
“Am I going to die?” I push out. My eyelids are drooping and I can feel myself slipping away. I try not to lose the face. Another hand swipes my cheek gently. It takes everything I can muster to inhale as much as possible.
“Yes, but only for a short while my dearest. You will be purged of the life you live now. You will awake again as a free person. Now sleep. Let the darkness consume you. Do not fight it…” He said something else, but I don’t catch it. I feel cold lips touch where the hand had been. I feel myself breathe my last breath. It goes out and another one refuses to come in. “Au revoir mon amour”
Everything turns black as the darkness seeps into my mind.

A burning sensation wakes me. It’s not through my entire body, but it’s only in my throat now. My eyes flick open. I see a glass sitting in front of my face. It’s a wine glass filled with a red liquid. I sit up and look around. There’s no one here. I feel as though someone should be here. I try to think. I can’t recall anything before this moment. What happened? The burning increases and I there is no more resisting the only drink inside the room. I grab the drink and chug.
