Hey guys! So just a reminder that this chapter is a DIFFERENT VERSION of XVI. (just in case any of you guys get confused halfway through the chapter like, "didn't I already read this?")

I highly recommend reading the last chapter that was updated before this one in order to get back on track. :)

I REALLY REALLY hope you guys like it and please tell me what you think of it.

[Eren]

The air is cold, stale. A comfortable yet tensing silence settles itself between us, like newly fallen snow in a white Christmas. The only sounds are the rustling of the trees in the wintery breeze, and the sound of my rapid breathing. Mikasa's back is still to me, her hair nearly obscuring her entire back. I never noticed how long it actually was. The silence stays.

"Eren."

The way she says my name, her tone dripping with acid, stings. I wince at the sound of that single word. Mikasa remains unturned, quiet. Her voice when she said my name was coarse, almost as if she'd just dry swallowed a big pill.

For a moment I'm flabbergasted; what am I supposed to say exactly? I clear my throat, as the thin and dry winter air has made it coarse.

"It's been a long time," I start, attempting to ease into conversation. Awkward silence settles between us quickly. "Almost-"
"Two weeks, yeah, I know." She says, her tone blunt, her words sharp. The icy way in which that sentence is said sends chills down my spine - Mikasa's façade has made a reappearance. It's almost as if the Mikasa that cried into my shoulder and drowned herself in blood and tears never even existed, like her suicide attempted never happened. I smile knowing very well she can't see my expression. Typical Mikasa. I take a step forward.

"How have you been? Safe? How are things at home? I came to visit-" my sentence cuts short as I notice Mikasa's entire body become like a statue, tense and still. I hear her breathing hitch in her throat and look at her, concerned. Her head is now turned to the side however still not enough for me to even see a glimpse of her face.

It takes a few seconds before she relaxes, taking a deep breathe. Silence continues for a little before she proceeds to answer, laughing a wicked laugh. "I've been just great, bright eyes, how about you?" Another laugh.

I'm taken aback by Mikasa's current behaviour. Yes, this is the usual Mikasa that everyone's used to seeing, but to me Mikasa's bitchy façade is just a tactic to keep people away from her. Just a few weeks ago she was crying into my arms, her body with such a softness it was hard to believe how much of a punch the small girl could actually pack.

"I-I've been fine, just worried about you." I manage to stutter out very incoherently, cursing under my breath quickly after for being so unsure of myself. She laughs again, shaking her head.
"No need to worry about me. Now get, small fry. I have a school to attend and records to set straight." Mikasa replies, her voice dripping with malice. My brows crease in confusion - records to set straight?

"What do you-" but before I can finish my sentence, I realize she's already ten feet in front of me, walking to school. I sigh, exasperated. Why the fuck is she so difficult like this? Regardless of my frustration, I can't deny her stubbornness is attractive. Shaking my head, I sigh, continuing on my way to school. I plug my headphones in again and simply begin walking, however throughout the entire ten minute walk it takes to get from home to school, there's only one thing I can think about:

Mikasa,

Mikasa,

Mikasa.
