"Chaz, Bailey, Theresa, and Jones, you four will head the team search in the upper east quadrant. The rest of you will take upper west. Team 2 is already headed to the south sections, and we've got guards posted at all entrances. Let's gear up."
I nod my understanding of the orders given to me and load myself down with ammo. Silver tipped arrows, my cross bow, a few silver blades, silver bullets.. All specially made by my father who had owned and operated his own gun range before the chaos started.
Ive known how to fire a gun and a cross bow since I barely knew how to walk, but blades never came into play until almost a year ago.
While waiting quietly for the others to finish readying themselves and our chief to give the go ahead, I think back to the beginning. Things weren't considered simple then, but they were easier. The world wasn't exactly safe but as things are now I would say it had been safe-er.
I just finished college but still lived with my parents. My mother was your typical stay at home mom, who would substitute at the local junior high during the school year. I am pretty much the spitting image of her. We both have dark hair and blue eyes, except she is taller. I'm 5'1 and she's probably somewhere around 5'8. I guess I'm decent looking but I like to think my personality trumps any unappealling aspects of myself.
My dad was a handsome man and like I said owned a gun range at our former hometown. He took very good care of himself and stood over 6 feet tall, with sandy brown hair and golden brown eyes to match. When the "apocolypse" started as everyone called it, he became a highly respected man in the community we joined because of his knowledge and skills in weaponry. After the war between vampires and humans began, the human population dropped dramatically and having someone around who could build, and also teach to use the only methods of self defense against these creatures we had, ended up being very valuable.
I can still remember that first night...
I was upstairs talking over skype to my older brother Chris about joining him in the city the following month. My dad and mom were downstairs on the back porch entertaining a few of their friends and every thing was the norm.
I heard screaming from outside and assumed it was from my mom, maybe they saw another snake. We lived in the back woods of southeast Texas then, and those things were everywhere in the country.
I realized after only a second that it was more than just my mom screaming, and then heard yelling from the men telling the women to get inside. After that were gunshots.
"What the hell is going on over there Bay?" my brother asked. I was about to explain how I didn't know but then the electricity went out.
I could hear running and frantic movements downstairs, along with crying and then more guns. Creeping to the door I could barely make out anything because of the darkness.
"Bailey? What's happening.. Christ answer me already!"
I walked back to my laptop, letting him see that I was ok but still had no words to describe the situation yet and could hear heavy steps pounding up the stairs. I didn't know if the approaching bodies were friend or foe and before I could decide I should probably hide, my mom and two other women, our neighbor Gina and my Aunt Linda came into the room.
Immediately, I could tell they were shaken up.
Aunt Linda shut the door and fastened the lock, all the while, the gun fire could still be heard downstairs, along with male voices shouting out at eachother to "look out!" and "right behind you!" I could make out one of those voices being my father's and managed to decipher the other as my Uncle Rusty.
