Jasper steps away from Ty and looks between him and the phone still ringing in his hand. Ty stares down at the caller ID, he is dumbfounded. It has been four weeks since he walked out of Ben’s home, and he has not heard a word from him since then. The ringing ends, and the call goes to voicemail. Jasper is cautious, he doesn’t know if Ty has been speaking with Ben or not. Jasper sort of just assumed that the two had ceased contact.
A moment later his phone buzzes with a text that informs him he has a new voicemail message. Ty locks the screen on the phone and puts it in his pocket. “I think I better go.”
“Are you alright?”
“Yeah,” but Ty shakes his head in contradiction to his words, “I just need some air.”
Jasper doesn’t want Ty to leave. They were just getting somewhere, after waiting for so long, for just a moment it had been so perfect. Ty doesn’t even say goodbye as he hurries out of the room and out of the house. Jasper watches him go and feels an ache start up in his chest. Ty just kissed him, but maybe he already regretted it. Maybe the phone call made him realize he wasn’t ready for something new, for someone new.
Ty feels sick as he leaves Jasper’s house and gets into his car. What is Ben calling him for, and why now? He doesn’t want to speak to him, he doesn’t want to hear from him. Ben is not supposed to be a part of his life anymore and that isn’t really up for discussion. He knew the way Ben let go was too good to be true, but he had been hopeful despite himself. He drives home and goes straight to his room, shutting himself in there for the rest of the night. There are too many questions that accompany the call, and even though he is curious, he can’t bring himself to listen to the voice mail.
Neither Ty or Jasper sleep well that night. Each time Ty closes his eyes he replays back the fights with Ben in his mind, them meeting again, the blissful months, the turn of the tide when his father left, the beatings, the screaming, the moments between the hurt. Then, meeting Jasper, and everything changing again. When he thinks of Jasper he thinks of this afternoon, and of how he left – right after they kissed. Right after that perfect moment that Ben somehow knew to ruin. Maybe Ty isn’t quite as ready to move on as he thought – but that just isn’t fair.
Jasper tosses and turns because something happened this afternoon that has never happened before, he kissed another guy. Not just any guy, Ty; Someone who completely stole his heart with a glance. As amazing as that is, and as happy as it makes him, there is a twisting inside of him that is turning it sour. Ty left. He didn’t stay and kiss Jasper again, he didn’t put away his phone like he didn’t care. He left because he wasn’t okay. Jasper feels sick about it, he doesn’t know whether he should have gone after him and made him stay or not. He is sure of only one thing, Ty isn’t over Ben. Not yet, and so Jasper has to step back, and give him the space he needs, But he isn’t sure he can do that.
~
When Jasper wakes up the next morning, his body aches and he is sure he can’t have slept more than two hours all night. At first he isn’t sure what woke him up, but when he rolls over he see’s someone walking around his room, pulling things out of draws.
“Mum? What are you doing?”
“Packing!” She is far too cheery for this hour of the morning – it’s not even 7am.
“For?”
His mother straightens up and smiles widely at him, she looks so young when she is so happy. “Your graduation present! I know that you said you wanted to see how you went on your exams, but there is a week until graduation day, and this just slots in perfectly.”
