As the boy walked in, my eyes flashed red. Not like I was about to die, but more of a sign--a sign that he was special. And I hated it. I didn't want anything to happen between me and the new kid, especially since he was human. But looking at him closer, he didn't seem like the usual obnoxious, selfish humans I usually encountered. But more like...Well...I don't know. There was something about him that didn't send anger through my body, which to me, was ultimately strange.

The boy dressed himself neatly, with a freshly ironed, blue collared shirt, and dark brown shorts that cut off just above his knee. He wore black shoes and ankle socks almost pure white in colour. His heart-shaped face was half covered with brown, smooth hair, which sat right above his almost black eyes that dazzled with interest.

"Not bad posture," I muttered aloud, keeping my eyes away from Mr.Drake and focused on the boy.

Out of the corner of my violet eye, I saw Mr.Drake's surprised face turn into a smile, with his bright, too-white teeth.

"I would like to welcome..." Ms.Starland started, booming on the microphone held in her thin hands. She seemed as she was expecting a drumroll--which definitely wasn't gonna happen. Realising there wasn't one, Ms.Starland cleared her throat and gestured a hand to the young boy, "Our new student, Kael Braveheart!"

All of the students started cheering for Kael, louder than I've ever heard before. I guess it was because throughout the whole year, nothing intriguing occurred during school hours.

"It's time," Mr.Drake lightly pushed against my back towards Kael, "Don't forget to smile." He smirked, knowing that I had never smiled in my life, and had no intention of doing so.

Meeting Kael at the front of the coutyard, I averted my eyes from his mysterious gaze. There was something about him that made me wonder, what secrets lie behind those dark brown eyes and warm smile?

I thrust my hand forward, half expecting him to cower away in fear.

"Welcome to Forestial Primary School," I murmured, wishing he would refuse to shake my hand and get out of my life.

But Kael just smiled and took my pale hand in both of his without hesitation, "Thanks a lot, I can't wait to spend more time with everyone."

Slightly dazed at his unexpected actions, I groaned unenthusiastically.

Not with me, I thought in my head.

But looking at him again, I wasn't so sure. I felt as though he would get through the barrier I use to avoid all humans--the one that had worked throughout these past twelve years.

After the mini ceremony, I threw the hood of my long black jacket over my dark brown hair and trudged up to my 'out of bounds' classroom.

Since I learned magic as well as the usual subjects during my time at school, I had to learn in a separate classroom than everyone else (so much for coexisting with humans). And because of my unwilling attitude to 'hang out' at lunchtimes, I just keep moving further away from everyone, avoiding all sources of communication with the humans at all times.

Reaching the bottom of the timber stairs, I slowly made my way up to the classroom, making echoing sounds with each step I took.

Taking a cautious glance behind me, I held my empty hand out and concentrated, watching as a bright aura filled the palm of my hand. In less than a second, the glittery aura moved into the shape of a key, finally forming the solid object in my hands.

The key was a shiny silver, and the handle was carved into various flowers, with swirly patterns coming out from the silver bouquet. Creeping down from the handle were tiny letters engraved in the metal, reading 'behave like a human, and no one will get hurt'. What does that mean? I pondered, what are my parents warning me about?

I inserted the key into my classroom door's lock and twisted it until I heard it unlock with a faint click, opening the old wooden door to a classroom unlike any other.

The whole second floor of the school was a room completely different from the average classroom, with it's windows on the right wall as the only light source, shining onto a brilliant mahogany desk stacked with books from 'Enhancing Your Powers' to 'The Wonders of Mathematics'. And if that weren't enough books, looking straight to the wall opposite me was a giant bookshelf that filled the whole wall.

On my left were several wooden chests closed up by heavy iron padlocks, all filled with various objects you'd never imagine (including hawk eyes).

I sat myself in my black, leather office chair and propped my elbows onto the wooden desk. Resting my chin on the back of my hands--which were marked with ancient inscriptions for power, luck, and fearlessness--I cocked my head to the side and gazed outside the small cracks in the aluminium blinds.

At that time, I couldn't help but picture Kael's mysterious face in my mind, unsure of what to think of him as: a rival, or just another plain human?

Through those dark eyes of his were secrets. Secrets that could either ruin or enlighten someone's life, or aspect on things. I could almost feel the power that human possessed, a power that could change even me...

NO!!! I urged myself, slapping my pale cheek with the hand it rested on.

That won't happen.

That can't happen.

Could it?
