"Welcome, class. I'm Professor Moody." Moody starts the lesson. His electric blue eye, still darting from student to student, giving Skyler a shiver of fear and a unknown feeling. 'Something isn't right, he's hiding something, obviously.' Skyler thinks, zoning out.
"ATTENTION!" Moody suddenly screams, startling Skyler, who is ripped from her thoughts. "Today, I'm going to tell and teach you guys about: The Unforgivable Curses. Does anyone know why they are named like that?"
Immediately, Hermione raises her hand. For a few months of the last year, Skyler tried to study just as hard as her, but she gave up after New York. She suspects that the others of the class also just wait until Hermione raises her hand. Who else would know everything?
"Because they are unforgivable. Casting one of these will grant you-" Hermione answers, being interrupted by Moody himself.
"Will grant you a one way ticket to Azkaban!" He spats, while writing something on the school board, fast and in an almost unreadable handwriting. "Put that chewing gum in your mouth instead of under your table, Mister Finnegan!" Moody adds, his focus still on the board.
"God, that guy has eyes in the back of his head." Seamus Finnegan, a Gryffindor, whispers to the guy sitting next to him. This causes Moody to throw a chalk at Seamus.
"I can also hear the entire classroom!" He yells. 'Odin, this guy has a bad temper...' Skyler thinks. "Now," Moody continues, "who can tell me a Curse?" Ron Weasley awkwardly raises his hand. Moody nods and gestures him to stand.
"My father told me about one... the I-Imperius Curse?" He whispers questionably.
"Oh, yes, sure your father would know all about it." Skyler hears Moody mumble. He walks to his desk, where pots and kettles are filled with animals and plants. Moody takes out a huge spider, and aims his wand. "Imperio!"
Skyler freezes. 'He's going to show the curses...' The spider jumps from student to student, frightening each and every one of them. Draco and Blaise laugh loudly when Pansy, who sits next to Skyler, shrieks in fear when it creeps up her hand. The entire class laughs, except Moody, Pansy and Skyler.
"Do you think it's funny?" Moody growls. "Would you think it funny, if I did it to you?" The laughter dies away immediately.
"Total control." Moody whispers. "I could make it jump out of the window, drown itself, throw itself down one of your throats... and it would obey."
Skyler sees how Pansy shudders next to her.
"Years back, there were a lot of witches and wizards being controlled by the Imperius Curse." Moody tells, and Skyler knows that he's speaking of the days that Voldemort was the most powerful. "The Imperius Curse can be fought, and I'll teach you how, but it takes a strong amount of character, and not everyone has that. Anyway, who can tell me another Unforgivable?"
Neville Longbottom raises his hand. Moody nods and Neville rises from his seat.
"T-there's one... t-the Cruciatus Curse..." He mumbles, obviously scared. Moody nods.
"Yes, that's another one... but it needs to be a little bigger to show you guys." Moody aims his wand on the spider again. "Engorgio!" The spider swells up, and grows bigger.
"Crucio!" As soon as the spell is said, the spider starts to crumble and its legs bend up its body, rolling over the table. Skyler is almost sure she can hear it scream. It's soft, but it reminds her of the screams from New York. The countless of mothers she heard scream from pain of the loss of their children.
"Stop it!" She exclaims, on the brink of tears. "Can't you see you're hurting it? Stop it!" The words are a demand, not a question. It's the kind of voice her grandfather uses when he asks for silence. Moody looks up and takes the spider to Skyler's table.
"Can you tell us the last Curse, Miss Foster?" He hisses. Skyler bites her lip, nodding.
"The Killing Curse..." She says, merely above a whisper. "Avada Kedavra." She adds whispering.
"Ah, yes, the worst of all." Moody croaks out. He points his wand to the spider once again. "Avada Kedavra!" He roars, and a green flash of light appears. A single tear goes down Skyler's cheek as the deed is done. Attempting to control her anger, guilt and frustration, she takes her bag and her book and rushes out of the classroom, not giving a damn about her classmates or the other lessons.
Skyler runs outside, and she keeps running, for it is the only thing that seems comfortable for her to do: running from the past. When she reaches the Black Lake, she climbs into one of the willows that stand at the shore and she lets the tears go.
'Using an Unforgivable, it destroys too much, like your soul...'
She remembers the rhyme that was written inside her book. It's like a warning to all students, so that they'd always remember the impact of using one of the three Unforgivable Curses. It'd not only damage the one it's used on, but also the one who uses it.
