It was a rather boring summer afternoon in Riverdale, as Archie & Jughead headed for Pop's Malt Shop, for lack of anything better to do. But as they walked thru the door, they realized something unusual was happening. In one of the booths sat Bullwinkle Moose and Rocky the Flying Squirrel.
Travel between different comic book and cartoon realities was one of those things that was often discussed among the citizens of Riverdale, but no one had actually experienced it. Some had claimed that the cartoon reality of Riverdale was too different from other cartoon realities for it to be possible to have visitors from them. And now here was proof that it was possible after all.
Archie and Jughead walked over to the booth where Rocky and Bullwinkle were sitting. "You may not know who I am..." began Archie.
Before he could continue, Bullwinkle Moose laughed and said, "Of course we know who you are, Archie, and you too, Jughead. We wouldn't be here, otherwise. Both Rocky and I have always been fans of the Archie comics and cartoons. Right, Rocky?"
Rocky the Flying Squirrel smiled and said, "I have a poster above my bed of your entire gang. And I've secretly always had a crush on Betty." He blushed slightly as he said this, but went on, "and one day I was visiting Mr. Peabody, who was working on his Way Back Machine. I asked if it could only go back in time. He said that that used to be the case, when the Way Back Machine had only had analog controls. But he'd recently made modifications so that it would accept commands from a computer keyboard, and so any location could be input. I asked if it could go to other cartoon realities, and he said he didn't see why not."
"That's when I got a call from Rocky, asking if I'd like to go to Riverdale with him," said Bullwinkle. "I'd always thought Pop's Malt Shop would be a fun place to visit, so I suggested that would be a good location to set the Way Back Machine to, rather than just the city of Riverdale. And here we are!"
Jughead had just been standing there silently, during all this, and finally spoke up, saying, "Any chance Natasha came with you? I've always wished I could meet her."
Bullwinkle laughed and said, "You and Rocky are a lot alike, being attracted to cartoon characters from other cartoon realities." Now it was Jughead's turn to blush, and stood there, embarrassed.
Rocky understood how Jughead felt, and changed the mood with, "Why don't we go see if she's home now?"
So Jughead and Rocky headed for the door. As they were leaving, Rocky was overheard to say, "I have all the albums by the Archies. Your drumming is really solid." Jughead was making some comment about the recording sessions, as the door closed behind them.
Bullwinkle and Archie then ordered hamburgers and malts, and discussed the good and bad points about being cartoon and comic book characters.
After awhile, Jughead and Rocky returned. Rocky looked miserable. Jughead said that Betty had thought Rocky was "cute", but she would never consider having a serious relationship with a squirrel.
So they took Rocky to the bar next door, drinking many margaritas to try to drown Rocky's sorrow. But Rocky just became more depressed, and wanted to bo back home in the
Way Back Machine.
Fortunately Reggie walked into the bar, and was delighted to see Rocky the Flying Squirrel there. He had always been a big fan of the Rocky and Bullwinkle Show, and had always identified strongly with Rocky. In spite of Rocky's initial rebuffs, that he wanted to be left alone in his misery, Reggie's constant flattery and questions finally got Rocky's thoughts off Betty's rejection. He was soon laughing at Reggie's stories about trying to force Moose to play "Rocky and Bullwinkle" with him, but Moose didn't know who Bullwinkle Moose was, and so just had made grunting sounds.
Reggie then mentioned that he had a scrapbook all about Rocky, and would like to show it to him. So Rocky went off to Reggie's place, much to the relief of Archie, Jughead and Bullwinkle, who continued drinking margaritas, and thought it was a lot of fun.
After awhile, Rocky and Reggie came back. Rocky said he'd had a good time, but was ready to go home. A short while later, after saying their goodbyes, Rocky and Bullwinkle set off to return to their own reality in the Way Back Machine. They didn't notice that Reggie had stowed away, in the back seat.
