smitten

a high school science classroom
27 annoyed freshmen
the scent of someone with just a bit too much perfume
curly hair stuck to your forehead
soft and gentle eyes gleaming
dimples framing a smile like a picture on a wall
and god, do i wish that picture was on mine
you tell a joke
i laugh, a bit too much
you smile, a bit too much
i want to tell you i love you
its a bit too much.

a car at midnight
with nowhere to go
parked in a field
crickets singing
leaves blowing in the wind
its been a week since we last talked
i stare at the sky, and try to make out constellations
i'd rather see you
a notification, and my heart skips a beat
you tell me you missed me, and my heart skips another
i want to tell you i love you
its a bit too soon.

my bedroom
another late night
the air conditioner humming
my dog snoring
the dim porch light illuminating my room through the window
me, sniffling
trying too hard to be quiet
i had another nightmare
you talk me down gently
i wish you were with me
good night, i say
good morning, actually, you reply
we argue over this for an hour
My tears begin to fall again
i love you
a bit too much.
