Asher swept into the passageway, ignoring Galen and Finn. He sped aimlessly forward, choosing the darkest and deepest paths as he descended further and further into the black labyrinth.
He went until he couldn’t anymore. A dead end stopped him flat, and he dropped to the cold, rocky ground, where the truth about his mother caught him like an arrow. Hidden in the shadows, he put his head between his legs and cried.
He couldn’t say what he’d lost, only that something was gone.
Once he’d exhausted himself on sobs and his eyes had dried away, Asher realized where he was: the catacombs beneath the castle, the burial grounds of the Queendom’s lost matriarchs.
He sat there, alone in the dark, and waited for a ghost to appear.
