Augustus's POV:
I had to do it. After thinking about it for a while, I think Hazel would want me to move on and be happy. That doesn't mean that I will forget about her and replace her, I just need to find something or someone else to make me happy. I've decided to go and let Jess know this before her date tonight so I don't lose her to quickly.
I run over to her house and ring the door bell hoping I caught her before she left for her date. A few seconds later the door swings open and she looks at me in shock and confusion.
"Gus?"
"Yeah, hey Jess, I just wanted to talk to you before you go, on your, ya know, date..." I trail off and rub the back of my neck nervously.
"Sure, go ahead." she replies.
Before I can even reply, I hear a car pulling up the driveway and a door slam. Before I know it, Leo is standing next to me asking Jess if she's ready. She does look really pretty tonight I think to myself.
"Oh, Gus, this is Leo," she says motioning to the boy beside her, " and Leo this is Gus."
"Hi." I say quietly and Leo says the same in reply.
"Ready to go?" Leo asks Jess.
"Yep! See ya later Gus, bye Adelyn!"
And before I know it, she is in his car and driving away. I guess I was just a little to late, I think to myself as I slowly make my way back to my house.
Jess's POV:
It has been pretty quiet in the car on the way to wherever Leo is taking me. That's okay though, because I needed a minute to think over what just happened. Why did Gus come over? He has been avoiding me most of the day anyway, and what could he possibly need to talk to me about that was so urgent anyway? Tonight is supposed to be fun and to get my mind off of Gus, so I decide that he will be off of my mind for the rest of the night.
We pull up in front of a cute little cafe called Lou's and I climb out of the car. Leo walks beside me and nervously tries to hold my hand. I grab his hand and he pulls open the door for me. As soon as we get inside, a waitress shows us to a nice quiet table in the back of the cafe.
"Good evening you two, you are so cute together!" the waitress coos.
"Oh we aren't together officially-" I start to say.
"Well, your adorable anyway! What can I get you to drink?"
We both order lemonade and the waitress scurries off to get our drinks.
"So, how do you know Augustus Waters?" Leo blurts out. Well there goes my whole 'not thinking about Gus' goal...
"Well, we're neighbors, and he's actually one of my best friends. We're nothing more though." I assure him.
He gives me a skeptical look, but moves off the topic.
"So, tell me more about yourself." he says leaning back in his chair. And that's basically how the rest of the night went; talking and getting to know each other.
----
"Can I at least help you pay?" I ask trying to pursuade Leo into letting me help pay for dinner.
"No, I've got this. It's my treat to you." he says smiling.
"Your so sweet, thank you." I reply with a smile back.
After he finishes paying for our meal, we exit the cafe and get back in the car and he drives back toward my house. He stops his car in my driveway and walks around the car to open my door for me.
"Thank you so much for tonight, I had a great time." I tell him.
"I also had a nice time Jess. I just have one question for you." he looks down at his shoes and kicks around a stone.
"Wi, Will you like to, um, be my girlfriend?" he stutters out.
I was a bit shocked, I didnt think he liked me that much! But, what could it hurt?
"Yes, I would love to." I say with a smile.
A smile spreads on his face as he leans closer to me. I immediately know what he is aiming for so I lean in to. His lips press softly to mine before we both pull away. The kiss was nice, but it wasn't the same as, as... Gus's. No, no thinking about him.
"I'll see you on Monday at school yeah?" he asks me.
"You bet!" I reply before waving to him while he backs out of my driveway. I notice something move above me and I look up to see Gus looking out the window. I wave up to him and he returns it with a small wave and smile.
I go inside and see that both of my parents are already asleep. I take off my makeup and take out my contacts before pulling on a pair of sweatpants and t shirt and then climbing into bed.
I think this is good for me, Leo is a sweet guy, and I think he really likes me. I still just dont understand why Gus came over right before I was about to leave. Whatever he has to tell me, I'll ask him about on Monday.
