PROLOGUE

A KING ENDS A MATCH OF CHESS, but in a world dictated by cards, what use does it make?

As stated by the Continental Drift theory, the world we know today was once just a single, large mass of land filled with people of differing practices and mindsets. But, in this story, rather than drift apart, this big piece of terra continued to compress, as the people developed and grew.

This phenomenon allowed countries to be established, and their people to flourish, as empires and rulers were then firmly recognized to be the kings and queens of this world's deck. This change however, caused a strike in confusion among the common folk.

No one knew which society they belonged to, nor did anyone know which king or queen they were subjected to serve. No one knew what made each monarchy different, as cards were still left dully blank – with no label or name to distinguish them.

Thus, a great king from the Northwest called for a meeting. This was where the first ever treaty had been signed. In this agreement, a system was established, finally putting color into the map of the great continent, Ornare. For in a terra occupied by four kingdoms, the simplest solution to distinguish its citizens was simply through one nontrivial thing: a deck of cards.

"What a fantastical story." She laughs as she lowers the book neatly on a wooden table, leaning back on the sofa.

It wasn't uncalled for a noble to indulge in reading, but she had never thought she'd engage in a book that was merely supposed to entertain a child who had a knack for myths and legends. Then again, for someone who can be rather brash and ignorant in their actions, it wouldn't really surprise anyone if she did.

A sigh escapes her lips as she closes her eyes, feeling a sense of boredom and laziness kick in from having to hide so long from her stuck-up mother– who was way too adamant in signing her up for dance classes.

Yet, despite her efforts, the door clicks open. She slowly rises up from the sofa, groaning when she feels the glare of the woman she's been desperately avoiding make holes at the back of her head.

Instinctually, she tightly shuts her eyes and readies herself for a screech that could only be caused by the stress of having to find her, the soon-to-be Queen of Hearts.
