I breathed my first words out in a garbled rush, saying, "Katie, I've taken you for granted, and in my mind nothing can mend the mistakes I've made. I've come to realize that the puzzle of my life was lacking the one piece that it needed to be fully functional. I want you in a way that I've never wanted before. You've taught me, learned along with me, and loved me, encouraging me to remain true to myself, and I don't believe I've ever uttered these words before. I was a fool for not doing so sooner. Katie Mitchell, I'm in love with you, would you do the honors of being my girlfriend?"
I looked at her, trying to piece together her reaction. Her face lit up and tears began to roll down her face. She ran to me; hugging me, throwing her arms round my neck, and tussling my hair. "Of course, Shawn," she whispered into my ear, "I'd never want it to be anyone else."
"I love you, you know that? And I'll never tire of saying that. Why? Because you're mine to tell," I spoke tenderly. I smiled, offering her my arm.
