I walked up the steps to the stage in my white cap and gown. I had a wide smile and stared into the crowd of the outdoor graduation. I saw everyone clapping loudly but it all faded away. The crowd appeared to be clapping but I could only hear one person. I stopped in the middle of the stage, confused. Looking into the crowd, all the color washed away into black and white. The only color there was the orange of a man's shirt. I looked to see his face and recognized the blonde haired man as my father. Gasping, I ran off stage and into his arms. He tried to speak to me, but his voice I could not hear. The scene morphed into a field. This time, I wasn't running. The storm behind me had yanked me from the arms of my father and dragged me under the dark clouds, away from the gazebo. There was a dark around me as I continuously felt like I was falling backwards. The thunder boomed louder and cracks of lightning were my only source of light. I was frantically calling out for my father but all I received was a lightning bolt to the chest.
With a jolt, I sat up in my bed. I groped all over my body and relaxed once I realized I was alive. I turned my head to see my roommate who was propped up on her elbows, staring at me.
"Nightmares again?" I simply nodded. She leaned back down and placed her head on her pillow. "Which one this time?"
"Graduation and my dad. This has been happening all week, and it sucks." I ran my hand through my hair and put the emphasis on the word 'sucks.'
"Well maybe it'll stop after graduation. We do graduate today." I looked over at the clock and it read 3:47 a.m. I groaned.
"Great. It's almost four and I.'m wide awake. Wanna go do something?" I turned on the light and squinted at the brightness of it and watched the pink streaks of my roommate's hair rise up with her head.
"Sure, .Val. What do you want to do?"
"I don't know, Anne. Let's just go walk or something." She agreed so we grabbed the keys to our dorm and left out in our sweat pants.
The cool Rhode Island air bit at my arms. It was still dark out and we walked away from our college campus in silence and I filled my head with worries from the future.
"Anne, do you ever worry about the future?" Anne rarely worried. She seemed to ways have a plan and it always was to tackle things as they came.
"In what way?"
"I mean, just think about it. We're 22 graduating from college today. Now that we have these degrees, where do we go from here? Everything I love is still back in San Diego..." My voice trailed off and Anne effortlessly came up with a plan.
"Then we go back." I looked at the smile across her face and formed one myself.
See, when we graduated high school, Anne and I stayed together and went to college together. I now had a degree in journalism, and her in cosmetology. Monica and Brent for some reason fell off the radar and I haven't talked to them since I left. Jayne, stayed back in San Diego and she went to a two year college for photography. She's got a photography studio opened. Meanwhile, Belle went to art school for three years, dropped out, went home to San Diego, and opened up a tattoo shop next to Jayne's studio. I always kept up with things at home.
With the boys, they did a little college, but quit and decided to focus on their band, Pierce the Veil. They had Pierce the Veil formed since their last year of high school and I love their band. Tony and Anne were madly in love, Mike and Jayne were taking it slow (No matter how bad Mike wanted to speed it up a little), Belle and Jaime are constantly breaking up and then realizing they love each other, and me and Vic... We have problems.
"So Tony's coming down for our graduation?" Anne's face lit up and I assumed that was a yes.
"Yeah, is Vic coming?" I shook my head.
