Four Days Before

~
"Nah yo ass lying!" Malik, my older brother smiles. "I'm bouta be an uncle?"

"Yeah man." Kevon smiles happily.

"Look at him, smiling like he top dog." Malik's fiancée Ashanti laughs.

The family was all gathered at my parents house in Queens for our regular Sunday dinner. My  mom seems to be okay with the pregnancy announcement. However, she does wish I would've taken the traditional route and had gotten married first. I told her that things just happen sometimes. My father also seems to be okay but I can tell he was still concerned for me. He was always so concerned when it came to his children.

"Are you still moving to California?" My dad asks, disappointment laced in his tone.

I sigh. "Yeah, dad. We can't cancel our working plans."

"My first grandchild and I won't be there to experience it all with you." My mom follows up, with sad eyes. Are they just trying to make me feel bad?

"I know, ma. But, I promise we will FaceTime, send post cards and visit whenever we can." I assure them

My mom gives me a funny look, but drops the subject. She doesn't look very pleased, but she is trying to act like she is. I thank her mentally for remaining happy for my sake. I would hate for this Sunday dinner to turn into a night full of arguments.

"Anyway," Malik speaks up, breaking the silence "What you cook, Ma?"

"Boy, yo hungry ass didn't help me so don't be asking what I made." Mom snaps back, jokingly.

Malik sucks his teeth and goes in the kitchen to sneak a peek at the pots and pans on the stove.

"Malik, get you greedy ass away from that stove! It ain't finished yet!" Mom yells after her son and follows him into the kitchen.

Ashanti and I begin to set the table for dinner. We are very close-as if we are sister's. She brings out the bubbly, excited and outgoing side of me, while I'm always the one bringing her back down to earth. We were the perfect combo.

Ashanti and Malik have been together for five years, and he proposed a month ago. They both have hopes of starting a new life somewhere new. Malik has always wanted to go to Los Angeles and wants to be there for me and Kevon when we move, whilst Ashanti doesn't have much family due to her parents dying two years ago- so she's always talked about being ready for a change.

"So, are you excited? Have you thought of baby names? When do you want to go shopping?" Ashanti exclaims happily to me.

"Damn, chill out." Kevon speaks up "We just found out yesterday." He chuckles.

"I know, but I love exciting news! Not much exciting news gets told around here." Ashanti says, placing down the cups on the placemats.

"Did you not just get engaged last month?" I chuckle. "I would think that's exciting news."

"I know, but that was a month ago. And I mean exciting news for someone else, not me." Ashanti defends herself. "I just can't wait until you get bigger and you glow and-eep! I can't wait to move out to LA with you guys and experience this with y'all."

"Malik, I think you need to have a baby or sum," Kevon jokes with Malik. "She over here more excited about this baby than Najlah is."

Malik comes out with his mouth full. "Don't jack that right now. We taking one step at a time." He kisses Ashanti's head with his greasy lips from his ma's pot roast.
