Ben's POV
"Now, we are going to place you in the advanced classes because you have already completed the majority of these courses, therefore, you will be using these to help you remember everything that you had previously learned. However, you finished phase one at an unpredicted time so, the classes that you are going to take are proceeding to take their midterms today. However, we are still going to merge you with the rest of the class, so you will take the midterm to refresh your brain of the concepts and ideas you may have forgotten" the WICKED employee instructed us on every tiny detail of our new lifestyle outside of the Maze. We walked down another identical hallway lined with various doors marked with different subjects. Eventually, the lady stopped in front of a door labeled, "Informational theory and Signal Processing". As the lady shoved all the Gladers inside, she shut the door and left us in the classroom.
As I glanced around the classroom, a sense of familiarity washed over me and I realized that I have been here before. The teacher who was standing at the front of the classroom approached us.
"Hello, you must be group A, please have a seat on the table with your name posted on it" the teacher smiled at us and gestured at the seats and students situated in front of her.
I scanned the room for my name and as soon as I found it, sat down.
"Why do we call mail sent by a car a "shipment" and mail sent by a ship a "cargo"?" The girl who was sitting next to me turned around and blurted out a question. At first, I assumed she wasn't talking to me, but no one else responded so I turned around.
"Excus-" As I was about to say something, my train of thought faltered as I recognized the person sitting next to me. Cassidy.
"I'm sorry about before if that's what's bothering you. It's just that control never notified me that you had completed the Maze so I completely freaked out when I saw like 50 guys just sitting in one of the simulation rooms. But, anywaysss..." Cassidy began ranting, totally oblivious to the fact that my jaw was probably unhinged and the fact that my brain just stopped working altogether. I quickly realized that she may not remember any of us, but she obviously knew a lot more about WICKED than we currently did, so it would be beneficial if we could be friends. I knew it would be hard trying to become friends with someone I was once so close with, but I had to try for the Gladers and for Cassidy's sake.
"You know, I would forgive you, but seeing as having a hundred teenage boys show up randomly is a completely normal thing-"I began to sarcastically respond to her awkward question before the teacher interrupted me.
"Ladies and gentlemen, as pleased as I am to see us welcoming back our friends and acquaintances, however, this does not excuse the fact that all of you will be taking the midterm today and I fear that if we do not start now, we will not complete the time allotted" The teacher standing at the front desk had stood up and begun passing out thick packets that I assumed was this so-called mid-term.
"Does she always speak like that?" I whispered as I leaned over towards Cassidy's seat.
Cassidy giggled in response, "Unfortunately, yes. Normally, I would start ranting about how terrible this class is, but she is passing out the mid-term right now so I suggest you stop talking and start praying".
"Ms. Kassandra and Mr. Franklin, I know that love sees no boundaries and I hate to break your hearts but I will not hesitate to hand out a zero to both of you lovebirds if you do not stop flirting," the teacher's attitude completely changed as she went from formal to teasing, but as I heard the class erupt into hoots and hollers, I couldn't help but feel a sense of vertigo as if I had done this before.
---
My hands shook as I turned in my heavy packet, the time had just run out and the only question I knew for sure that I had gotten right was my name. I thought that I wouldn't care about my scores or how much I knew, after all, I didn't even know these people, but I couldn't help but try to prove to them that I was much more than just brawn.
"Okay, I am going to turn these into the main center, please keep your voices down and do not discuss anything about the test" Mrs. Frank, as I later remembered her name, walked out the door with the stack of completed midterms in her hand. As soon as I turned around, I saw Thomas and a boy from WICKED, Alex, arguing about the answer to a problem while bluntly ignoring what Mrs. Frank just said.
"What do you mean the answer was 58, I know that it was 58.5!" Thomas and Alex began yelling over each other as if they were close friends.
"Your answer was South Africa, wasn't it?" Cassidy came and sat down next to me.
"Yes, Ms. Mind Reader, how did you guess?" I replied with my voice oozing sarcasm.
"You didn't answer the question, did you?"
"Nope."
"Okay."
We sat in silence until the class was finally over and everyone retired to their sleeping chambers. Since the Gladers had just escaped the Maze, we were situated in a different building than everyone else. Their fault, they should have watched over us.
---
"So I'm guessing that everyone knows our strategy, yeah? We all need to pretend that we love being in WICKED so that they are not suspicious. But in the night time, after curfew, we should start investigated and try to find a way out of this shuckplace" Minho sat down on his bunk bed with all the Gladers huddled in their own space while we formulated a plan.
"I think that we could get around the compound through the air vents because they are everywhere and they don't have security on them" Thomas suggested as everyone around him bobbed their heads up and down in agreement.
"Okay, today Thomas, Ben and I will go investigate because we can't have everyone going at the same time. Clint- you're in charge while we're gone". Minho ordered. I could see that as much as he was trying to keep it together for the Gladers sake, he was suffering. It was no secret in the Glade that the Keeper of the Runners was very close friends with Cassidy and seeing her like that probably wasn't easy at all.
Sometimes I know he wishes he didn't go through those air vents that day because what we saw just made him wish that everything was back to how it always was.

I know it's been over a month since I last updated and I'm so so so so sorry about that. I had so many new ideas for this and it took me a really long time to find out where I wanted to go with this book. But, since school is starting really soon, I might start updating less and so I'm not going to make any promises, but I really do hope that I won't take this long to publish another chapter again.
Thank you so much if you're still reading this story because that deserves to be applauded. Keep smiling :)
