The blazing afternoon sun was beating down scornfully on everything beneath it. The roads were not safe to travel on during the spring and summer months, as the burning light from the sun would hit the asphalt and burn holes right through the soles of your shoes.

They'd learned to stick to the forests. Stay hidden from the harmful rays of the sun underneath the safe canopy of leaves from the trees.

They were heading south towards warmer climates. Vermont has brutal winters, and they quickly realized if they were going to survive they had to keep moving.

"Well?" She asked, cocking her head towards her partner, ushering him to decide their next move.

"Hm... I've always wanted to go to D.C." he paused, stroking his beard in contemplation of the two options before them.

"Wanna go steal the Hope Diamond?" She asked, the corners of her mouth turning upwards slightly.

He looked down at her, his eyebrow raised up in consideration and his lips pursed approvingly.

"After you, Peanut."

"I thought there'd be more biters." Wren said, looking around the city with cautious eyes, searching for any signs of a heard. It had taken them two days to get to the heart of D.C.

"Me too." Bo replied, scanning the streets with laser sharp focus, keeping a firm grip on his axe that hung lazily by his side.

"Let's just scavenge what we can here and get out, you know I hate being in the city." She spoke firmly but her voice couldn't hide the fact that she was nervous. Cities were a double-edged sword, plenty of buildings, and stores, and townhomes to gather necessary items for survival, but the dead ran rampant. Too many biters for just two people to take on.

They were quick and knew how to use their weapons well, but it was too easy to become surrounded with no way out in a heard, and cities were a nesting ground.

"Normally I would tease you about being nervous, Peanut," Bo paused, looking around the eerily calm and quiet city. "But I have to agree with you. It's too quiet here, shit's freaky."

Wren nodded her head in agreement and gripped her walking staff tighter, "Let's go just outside of the city, should only be another seven miles or so. We can find a store there to raid."

"Sure, we need to find somewhere to stay for the night, too. It'll be dark in a few hours and I don't want to be out here snuggling up to the biters." Bo grinned, jutting his elbow out hitting Wren's arm in jest.

Wren rolled her eyes at her companion's lame attempt at making her laugh, "Please, like any biters would be so desperate."

"How dare you! Any woman dead or alive or living dead would be lucky to snuggle up to me." He glowered, feigning offense. He dramatically threw his axe over his shoulder, stomping off ahead of Wren.

"Oh, real mature, Bo!" She called after him, picking up her pace to match his.

It took them another 3 hours to get to a store that looked like it had anything worth scavenging. There were a few biters stumbling around the parking lot, blocking the entrance.

"Okay, you go take out those two and I'll get the three on the left." Wren spoke quietly to Bo on her right. He nodded and they started making their way towards the slow but deadly threats.
