Okay so this was an assignment my honors Language Arts teacher had us write and I decided I would put it up on Wattpad just for fun :) We had to write a tale of nature (how something came to be) or we could have written a tale of a hero, but I decided to write about how something in nature came to be and I chose Night :) I am actually going to turn this one in on Friday! It's my edited copy and everything :O! SO if you decide to read it thank you very much and let me know if you like it :)
Tale of Night
At this point in day, night never came to any of the cities that covered the Earth. Man and woman had never heard of such a thing. It was bright all day, every day.
Anki was the ugliest woman in her city. Her looks told people ugly, hideous, monster, but her voice said melodious and beautiful. She would not leave her room. She knew people would only see her looks because every time she left the house, men would spit on her and call her rude names, the women would hide their children's faces, while the children, who had only gotten a glance at her screamed in horror and ran away. Her own parents had a hard time looking at her. They were afraid of her.
Every night she prayed to the Gods and Goddesses, mostly Aphrodite, and ask that she could become beautiful and get revenge on all the people that had made her life miserable.
Every day she stared in the mirror, trying to make herself look prettier, but nothing could cover the hideousness of that she portrayed.
Her parents tried to pay men to marry their daughter so that she would not live alone all her life. They believed that if she were to marry and have a family, she would be less ugly. None of the men would agree. They all said, "I would rather burn in the Underworld with Hades himself than come within one hundred feet of that gruesome creature, much less marry it."
One day, a man arrived from out of town. He said he did not remember where he was from, or even his own name. Anki's parents took him in, fed him, and bathed him in hopes that they could bribe him to marry Anki.
Back in Olympus, Aphrodite heard Anki's prayers and felt for her, so she went off to find out why Anki was so unbearable to look at. She first traveled to Zeus and asked, "Cronides our Father, King of Kings and Lord of Lords! Why does Anki have to suffer so? Who has made her this way? Can we not spare a small amount of beauty and rain it down on her?"
Zeus replied, "You may not spare a single ounce of beauty on this foul woman. But you may visit Hephaestus, the God of Fire, the only ugly one of us all. Seek him out and he shall give you the answer you long for."
So Aphrodite went looking for Hephaestus. She approached him, as he greeted her.
"Aphrodite! Love and Beauty herself! Come, come. Let me feed you and you shall then tell me of why you have come to visit after so long."
Aphrodite nodded as she sat down at the long dining table. As they finished up eating, Hephaestus asked Aphrodite the reason of why she was here.
She responded, "A young girl, who goes by the name of Anki. Would you, the ugliest of Gods, know why she is so dreadful to look at? She lives a life of misery, and I was told, by Zeus himself, not to shower her with beauty."
He thought for a moment. "A shower of beauty will not help her, for she is my daughter, therefore immortal. No amount of beauty, from you, or anyone else, shall make her any less ugly. But listen, if you somehow make it so the man cannot see her, he is bound to fall in love with her voice."
With that, Aphrodite thanked him and left to find the Sun and the Moon. The Sun agreed to let the Moon take its place when it was seven o'clock at night.
Aphrodite, pleased with herself, made her way back to Anki and told her of her plan.
"When the clock turns seven for the second time today, the Moon will take the Sun's place in the sky and it will be dark. At this time, make your way to the room that your parents allowed the stranger with no memory to stay in, only stay while the Moon is in the place of the Sun, otherwise he shall see you and no longer want you."
Anki thought this was crazy, it to become dark outside? Preposterous! But she was a Goddess and Anki did what Aphrodite insisted she do.
She spoke to the man with no memory and he instantly fell in love with her voice, and she fell in love with him. Aphrodite granted that this man become immortal, so Anki could live a long, happy life with him.
To this day, the man with no memory, later to be named, appropriately, Hephestie, has not once seen the woman whose voice he fell in love with and to this day, the Moon still takes the place of the Sun in memory of the first night, when they fell in love.
