I looked at myself in the mirror and frowned one last time before finally leaving my room and running out of my house before my mom could ask me to join them at breakfast. I jogged all the way to school, only stopping once I got to the gates.
I took my phone out and texted Jule asking where she was as I passed some freshmen on the stairs. After a couple seconds she responded saying she was already in homeroom so I quickly made my way there.
When I walked in, she looked up from her phone and smiled at me. I returned the favor by putting on a massive smile and throwing my backpack on to the seat next to hers.
The bag hit the chair with a loud bang and slid off. That caused us to giggle a bit before I jumped over next to where my bag fell, adjusting it and then sitting down. Jule asked me how my night was and we started talking normally until the teacher came in.
A couple hours passed until the lunch break started. Jule and I met up in front of the cafeteria doors. I greeted her and she asked me if I wanted to enter the cafeteria. I nodded my head and we pushed open the cafeteria doors together. The food queue was relatively short and we were at the front in no time.
We both grabbed a tray. I got half a bowl of salad and a bottle of water. Jule however decided to buy a hamburger, a can of coke and a bag of chips. I always wondered how she managed to stay slim even when she ate this much all the time. Then again she had been gaining a lot of weight lately, maybe she was eating more than usual, I wasn't sure.
We chose an empty table, sat there and started eating but as usual most of the eating was done by Jule. A couple minutes later John Mayers decided to show up most likely just to spite me.
"Well, hey there Jule~ How've y'been this fine day~" he said in a flirty voice as he leaned on our table.
Jule giggled a bit before shyly saying "Hi..." and then looking down at her now empty lunch tray.
"Why don't you go back to your popular pals and leave her alone," I said sassily and proceeded to take a sip of my water.
"Why don't y'mind yer own g'damn business," he replied after which he touched Jule's arm, said "See y'after school muff'n," winked at her and left.
I loudly growled and sighed after there was a much needed 15 feet distance between him and us. I despised him. How dare he flirted with my best friend. I didn't trust him one bit, especially since he was a junior and one of the most popular guys in school. He wouldn't randomly be interested in Jule, would he?
She was a usual freshman. Her grades were good since her parents forced her to study in all of her free time unless I called them to ask permission to hang out with her a day before. Her looks were average, don't get me wrong I thought she was gorgeous but it was quite obvious she was no beauty pageant. Her confidence in herself however... Let's just say she lacked that skill quite a bit.
She actually didn't use to be like that. The first time we met was when I was in 7th grade and she was in 6th. I had just transferred schools due to some bullying I didn't like to talk about. She had a couple of friends in her grade. I had been reading a book on one of the benches in the halls when she spotted me. She had decided that she was going to befriend me. I didn't use to be the best talker there was back then but I got better with some practice. I remembered all the times when Jule kept talking nonstop while highly encouraging me to speak up and asking me questions to make me feel more involved with the conversations.
Then one day her old friends decided we weren't good enough friends. They started mocking Jule for speaking as much as she did and told her she somehow wasn't good enough. They started hanging out with some of the most popular people at that time. They mocked us and told others about some secrets we used to share with each other.
That's when Jule started to get more quiet. She would rarely speak, even to me. She started focusing more on school and her parents started forcing her even more to study and signed her into music lessons assuming she'd be happier and talk more if she was more successful. They scheduled weekly appointments for her to see the school counselor. To think that would do any good was probably one of the stupidest things they've done.
She already felt unsafe at home because of the pressure her parents created for her but they crossed the line when they bribed a couple of teachers to monitor her every move at school, assuming they hadn't already crossed it.
"Were you even listening to me?", Jule asked, distracting me from my thoughts.
"Oh shit, I'm sorry I must have spaced out," I say. "What were you talking about?", I add as she rolls her eyes
"I was actually in the middle of a lecture about why you shouldn't be mean to John."
