chapter one
It started off as any other perfectly normal Tuesday night. I put the dog outside, I locked the front door, I said goodbye to my parents as they went off to another party, and I made sure the window right above my bed was unlocked and slightly ajar. I keep it this way because you see, I expect a visitor. Last night, a young boy came into my room through the window and leaped into the house. He seemed small, and thin, and he was dressed in leaves and random bits of cloth. I watched him rummage around in my room, he seemed to be looking for something until he jumped up, hung in midair for a moment and then flew out the window. Yes, he flew out! Now I’m not crazy, I’m sure of what I saw, and I decided that since he didn’t find what he was looking for yesterday, he would come back tonight.
But back to the story.
I watched out my window as my parents strolled down the drive and into the waiting car to take them to their party. I lay down in my bed, getting comfortable, waiting for the boy. I thought of what would happen when the boy finally appeared in my window. Would I jump up and snatch him, or would I simply announce myself? I wondered what the boy looked like from the front, what his face looked like. I wondered what he was called and where he was from and why he could fly and at that point I had done so much wondering that my wonder-er was sore and I had drifted to sleep.
I was awoken several hours later by the sound of a light clicking at my window. My eyes snapped open to see the smallish boy dressed in leaves and bits of cloth climbing through my window, only this time, a small bead of light followed him into my room. Just like before, he leaped in and began rummaging around. The small bead of light followed by his side and seemed to be whispering lightly.
“It’s got to be in here somewhere, Tink.” The boy spoke. I jumped at the sound of the boy’s light, slightly feminine voice. It was a bit high for a boy’s but he was just a boy, he seemed to have plenty more growing to do in his lifetime.
When the boy had his back turned, I slowly crept out of my bed, made my way to the light switch and clicked it on. The boy suddenly turned around and I finally saw his face. He was very beautiful; he had bright blue eyes that shined with the innocence of youth and dark brown hair slightly flipped to the side. He wasn’t as young as I had previously thought; he looked to be the same age as me.
When the light flicked on the boy stayed still. We just stood there and watched each other. “Excuse me” I said, finally breaking the silence, “What are you looking for?”
The boy unfroze and jumped up in midair and just sat there. “None of your business.” The boy said moving slowly to circle around me.
“Well I think it’s plenty of my business, you’re in my room.” I replied, turning to follow him as he circled around me.
“That doesn’t make it your business it just makes you in the way.” The small bead of light began following him in the circle.
“It doesn’t make me in the way it makes you in the way for rummaging through my things. So what are you looking for?”
“I thought I told you it was none of your business.”
I was about to reply when I heard a rustling coming from one of my dresser drawers.
“That’s it then, you have it!” the boy said flying over to the drawer. He opened the drawer and out flew a big black mass that dashed around the room. “Why did you steal my shadow?!” the boy shouted at me while he chased it about the room.
“Your shadow?” I asked watching him make a muck of my room.
“Yes why did you steal my shadow?! Now I’ll never catch it! Tink help me out!” the little bead of light started chasing the shadow with the boy all around my room trashing everything in their wake.
