mikes pov

i woke up, laying in my basement. my head was sore. it felt like it had crumbled into 3 million pieces. but it didn't. my head was fine. maybe. i don't have much memory of last night. i know will cane over, but the last thing i remember was my mom slamming me into the glass coffee table before i blacked out. she hated will, but she didn't want to ruin our cover, so she didn't tell him that.

i slugged up to the living room and saw my parents, watching their normal "Wheel of Fortune." i walked past them, into the kitchen, without saying hello.

"michael! manners!" my mom called out.

"morning my l-loving parents." i glared at them, my forehead, full of scratches and cuts.

my mom grinned and shook her wine.

"have fun with billy tonight." i laughed, running upstairs, regretting what i just said.

"MICHAEL!" my mom screamed, running up to me.

i've learned her tricks, so i quickly slipped into nancy's room and locked the door.

"i lov- MIKE!" nancy jumped, slamming the phone down.

"who do you looove?" i sung.

she scoffed and rolled her eyes. she opened her mouth to speak, but nothing came out.

"jonathan." she mumbled after a good 5 minutes.

i giggled.

"i think his brother is also pretty cute." i grinned.

"what?" nancy choked out.

"i think he is also pretty cute—??" i spat out without thinking.

"hm. alright." nancy rolled her eyes.

she glanced at my forehead.

"mom got mad again, hm?" she asked.

i slowly nodded.

"she's gotta learn to stop." nancy groaned.

i slowly walked to the window in nancy's room and opened it.

"what are you doing?" nancy asked, confused.

"sneaking out, don't tell mom." i grinned.

nancy shrugged and called jonathan back. i slipped out onto the roof, sliding down. i jumped onto the grass, and groaned as i hit the ground. i quickly jumped up and ran over to someone's house. wills house. when i got there, will answered.

"hi mike!" he cheered, pulling me inside.

for a minute, we got really close, i thought, maybe i could kiss him— i don't know. i didn't, i didn't kiss him, i just pulled back. he sat on the couch.

"what brings you here?" he smiled.

"i want to know if you'd want to go to the- the quarry." i mumbled.

he thought for a moment, and nodded. i was already dressed, so was he. he just went to grab his swim trunks, and i already brought mine, along with a shirt, for.. reasons. we bolted from the house and onto our bikes. i left mine at his house, so i always had it when i visited.

we rode to the quarry, passing up troy and his homophobic clan, cult, whatever you wanna call it. as we drove past, troy yelled something inaudible, that we couldn't understand. we drove up to the rocky pathway, and parked our bikes. we ran out to the edge of the quarry. will slipped and almost threw himself in, but i caught him just in time.

"thanks." he mumbled.

i nodded and stared into the water. it was pretty high up, so you need a certain way to jump in or else you'll probably get hurt. will leaned over the edge. i heard a few bikes pull up, so i turned around. troy, james and his other friend liam pulled up. they grinned.

"hey losers!" troy yelled, hopping off his bike.

will turned around and rolled his eyes.

"get away, troy." will growled and troy and his squad ran closer.

"ooh, pretty boy is trying to be strong." he grinned.

i shoved troy onto the ground, causing his group to push me. i hit the edge of the quarry, and hoped will would grab me, but he didn't, he was in too much shock. i grabbed the edge of the quarry before i fell. i was hanging around 600 feet from the water. will glanced at me and sighed. he went to grab my arm, but liam pulled him back, and james stepped on my fingers. the pain of his cleats, may i add, stung my knuckles, and i let go. the last thought of mine was, i hope will is gonna be alright. i didn't think about anyone but will.

i hit the ground and went under the water, i was still awake, but my back ached and burned. will was still up there.

"JUMP DOWN!" i screamed at will.

he looked down at me, and threw himself off the edge. quickly, i held out my arms so i would hopefully catch him, and i did. he landed in my arm, so hard i thought it would break, and technically my arms should have broken. troy and his group glared over the edge, they hopped down to come grab us. in the water, they could drown us. so will and i swam over to the rocks, and hopped onto them, sprinting up to our bikes, troy and his squad 10 feet away. will almost tripped, but i grabbed his arm to steady him.

we reached our bikes, we got on, and rode away quickly. troy stopped, as we rode away, in despair of not killing me. we rode back to will's house and i dried myself with a towel.

"hey boys!" joyce smiled from the kitchen.

"hi mom.." will mumbled.

i stayed quiet, and will brought me to his room. we sat down and talked about what had just happened. he was a bit fidgety, but that's normal for will.

"hey mike?" will muttered.

"yeah?"

"is it normal to be- to be afraid to love somebody?" will asked.

"no. not at all. why? who do you love?" i asked.

"i mean, i was just wondering." he mumbled.

"oh, okay." i smiled weakly.

"i was dating a kid named jackson for a while, and i never told anybody, but one day he left hawkins and the way he left, he dropped me off at the quarry and said he'd come back for me, but he never did, and i'm afraid to love someone because they might do the same to me again." he spat out, seeming like it was all in one sentence.

i stared him down.

"jesus, i'm sorry." i said.

he shook is head.

"it's fine." he mumbled.

i suddenly grabbed his hand and held it tight, letting him know that i'd never let him get hurt, and that i'd protect him, and that i was his best friend. he looked shocked, like he'd pull his arm away, but he didn't. he sat there, and smiled.
