Soter sat on a bench in the courtyard. The air was cool and teased his shoulder length hair. He would give anything to just shift into his Djartte and fly away. At his age most young gons remain as dragons for years and travel across the differing wilds of Igsylgard. On the contrary with The Chase coming soon he was charged to stay in the capital. They would most likely announce the participants and the end of the year. 50 years had passed since the last one - but for dragons - that wasn't even a tenth of a lifetime. Just thinking about it made his head ache. He prayed to Elohim that he wouldn't have to be in it. Afterall, he had already found the agon he wanted to marry.
Just then, Delius Eli came around the corner. The elder brother to the emperor and constant pain in the tail. "I was just about to give up on you." Soter sighed standing up.
"I say the same thing every time I come to see you. Yet here I am." The gon smiled.
"I haven't the slightest idea why, I must admit." Soter chuckled. "For as long as I can remember you have been randomly coming to see me and giving me annoying advice you know I am never going to use. You mind filling me in?" He looked up again now. Nothing less than a Royal, the gon was wearing a long violet outer robe with the royal red and gold trim. His red harem pants also had a gold design on the waist belt and his shirt was white with a red design.
"Why are dragonfolk born with a name and then fated another?"
"Here we go" Soter breathed.
"Hey I am serious just answer the question." Delius smirked.
"Dragons are - one of the races closest to Elohim... We are among the longest lived, we have the most potent Talent. We have two names because we are born with a fate we cannot change - granted by Elohim - and a fate we can shape... Because of free will or something." Soter half mumbled. He hoped Delius Eli would not push for more as he only pulled that from one of the tutoring sessions he bothered to pay attention to.
"Almost. You are right - there is a fate we are born with that we cannot alter - we cannot change. What you missed young gon, is that we don't have two separate fates. The second name is the symbol of how we live out that fate - whether we fight it, embrace it, or make it greater" Delius sighed waving the young gon to head toward the palace with him. "I suppose you could say, because I know your name, I am interested in being part of the fate you have. I see you as being more than what you appear and I value what you will bring to the world. The moment I laid eyes on you Mars, I knew."
"What?" Soter asked curiously stopping to turn back toward his mentor.
"You are special, Soter Mars." He placed his hand on the young gon's back.
"I don't know whether to be honored or just throw up." Soter laughed. At this they both turned toward back toward the palace and continued to walk.
Right as they were about to enter the palace, Soter noticed something dark in his peripheral vision. To his left he noticed what looked like a trail of black smoke floating down. From the ground up, he watched in confusion as the smoke transformed into a young agon. Right as he was about to mentally note her beauty – he realized she was the traitor's cub. But she was hardly a cub anymore. Even from underneath her shapeless bag of a dress her curves came through. As the last wisp of smoke took form it simply became a drop of water and fell to the ground. More tears followed and noticed the rise and fall of her chest as she sobbed.
"Typical" he whispered to himself turning away. That was the end of that – nothing less attractive than an overly dramatic agon.
"See something you like?" Delius Eli poked as they went through the large iron doors. "Tears move you?"
He sighed. "I've no time for silly emotional agons."
