The train gave a "toot" for its last passengers to board. The three friends; Lily, an average-sized girl with long, red hair and flushed cheeks, Anne, a small girl with flowing blond hair and startling green eyes, and Alice, a tall girl with short brown hair and blue eyes that seem to smile; all board the train and blew kisses to their families. They walked down the aisle to the nearest empty compartment.
Two boys knocked on the door, both with grins so wide you can see all their teeth. They joined the girls even in their protest.
"We are so sorry for the inconvenience, but every single compartment is full. If you would be so kind to-" the boy with shaggy black hair and bright green eyes started.
"Cut the act, James, just take a seat!" the girl closest to the door, Anne, said. She blushed when Sirius, the shady boy behind James winked his mischievous, blue eye at her in thanks.
The ride to the teens' school, Hogwarts, was a loud one, except for Lily, who glared out the window menacingly. A few times the others would ask why Lily was so subdued, and why she looked as if she would like to strangle someone. Lily would just shrug and clench her fists.
Lily did not want James Potter in the same room with her, let alone the same bench. By the time they arrive to Hogwarts, she was fuming and snappy. Alice tried to sound humorous when asking Lily what was wrong.
" Look, please do not bite my head off, but what has got your wand in a twist? You seemed to have been fine before the boys joined us, but after we were lucky enough to get an eye-roll from you. Is James such a problem that you can't stand to be with him?"
Lily did not want to respond, but the look on her face said it all. It's not James himself it's the memories of whom he brings with him.
Just then Severus Snape, a tall, skinny boy with long, greasy hair storms by giving a short greeting "Lily" in a malicious tone.
Lily broke down right there, in the middle of students hustling each other, getting off the train, and running to meet friends. Anne and Alice threw their arms around her to try to comfort her as the memory of Severus, the boy who used to be like her long-lost brother, filled her mind.
Lily and Severus were walking across the castle courtyard, evidently arguing.
"thought we were friends, best friends?" Severus asked.
"We are Sev, but I don't like the people you're hanging round with! I'm sorry, but I detest Avery and Mulciber! Mulciber! What do you see in him, Sev; he's creepy! D'you know what he tried to do with Mary Macdonald the other day?"
Lilly had reached a pillar and leaned against it, looking up into the thin, sallow face.
"That was nothing," said Severus. "It was a laugh, that's all-"
"It was Dark Magic, and if you think that's funny-"
"What about the stuff Potter and his mates get up to?" demanded Severus. His color rose again as he said it, unable, it seemed, to hold in his resentment.
"What's Potter got to do with anything?" said Lily.
"They sneak out at night, There's something weird about that Lupin. Where does he keep going?"
"He's ill" said Lily. "They said he's ill-"
"Every month at the full moon?" said Severus.
"I know your theory," said Lily, and she sounded cold."Why are you so obsessed with them anyway? Why do you care what they're doing at night?"
