Prologue

2 weeks earlier...

"Yeah right! He was not checking me out. I looked like Shrek sitting on that couch." Gavielle drunkenly says checking her nails.

It's currently two twenty-three am. We've snuck out of our houses just to go to a party across town only to have our ride desert us there.

Now, eight hours later here we are walking down the main road in the projects on Cybil Street and all we could talk about was our night.

"Please Nina, you looked amazing. We both did."  I twirl as we're walking down the street. I swing my heels in my hand and feel the gravel on my toes and I watch out for glass. I smile, feeling giddy all over. The liquor kicked in a long time ago but now it just wants me to make a fool of myself.

My thoughts are scrambled in my head and I just blurt out what I thought.

"Gavielle, you know what? You're just so hot. I'm glad you're my best friend Gav. I love you." I grab her hand and squeeze it. I don't let go.

"Woah Mers, in our feelings now?" My heart jumps. I look over to see her brown face stretched into a smile. "I'm kidding. I love you to bebita. A Traves de la Galaxia. You know that."

I look down.

"Yeah, I know." I tried shrugging it off. It gets quiet after we pass a black Lincoln SUV. I see movement near the car when we get three houses down. I suddenly can't stand the quietness.

"Gav who do you like?" I ask trying to put everything on a lighter note.

"No one at the moment. Although Dylan is a hot piece in that meat suit of his. Oh, and Alejandro has a nice body yet that doesn't make up for how much of a mouth breather he is."She glances a little over her shoulder.

"Mers, were they there a minute ago?" I sense nervousness and questioning in her voice. I look over my shoulder to see four men near the Lincoln SUV we passed. They all seem to be doing different things.

One was getting something out the trunk of the car; another was on the phone with someone; a silhouette seemed to be smoking a cigarette and the last one was holding something... by the way, he was holding the object it seemed to carry bullets.

I turn back around as soon as I realize that they waited until we passed them to get out the vehicle.

"J-just keep walking, It's probably nothing. " I reassure. I doubt that I can stay calm for long so I start quick pacing to the end of the street ready to run quickly once I was out of sight.

I figured we just looked like we were switching our butts because we were trying so hard to look mundane.

"Mercury, it's a gun." She starts sweating and I can see her eyes get glossy. I hold her hand just a little tighter.

"Yes, I saw. Gav I want you to do something. I'll do the same thing." I let go of her hand and reach inside my jacket to grab my phone.

"Grab your phone," I look over to see if she's following instructions, " and press your power button on and off five times. It will automatically call emergency services. Turn your volume down and put in one earbud." She calmly puts the earbud in and acts normal. I do the same. I press my power button on and off five times.

Out of my other ear, I can hear someone fast walking behind us.

"911 what is your emergency?" The dispatcher said composedly.

"I-I think uh someone is trying to shoot at us. I mean, t-they haven't shot yet but they have a gun a-and they're following us." The words roll off my tongue with a stutter and I feel on edge. Although it seems as if Gav was more than on edge than I. She now has mascara dripping down her chin, staining her white apparel and she seems to be having a small quiet breakdown while trying to keep in contact with the dispatcher.
