One of the first steps of writing is knowing proper grammar and spelling. It's the key to any good story or paper. Many books are super, super, super amazing...but the grammar and spelling mistakes throw it off.

Now, I know — Alexis, not everyone is a great speller, or they aren't the best at grammar, or different countries spell things differently. I know. Trust me, I do. And that's really not what bothers me.

What bothers me is when people try to write novels and use "texting language" or the word they're using is completely misspelled. Favorite/Favourite, Color/Colour, things like that are okay. But please, please, please do NOT use texting language or slang in a story. However, slang can be used in dialogue if it's important to how the character speaks and presents themselves!

DO
She, step by step, made her way to the door, where her boyfriend, John, would be standing when she opened it. The two were going on a date.

"What are you doing, beautiful, curvaceous lady?" He smoothly spoke to her.

"I was sleeping." She hadn't answered his calls, for she had taken a nap.

"Oh, that sounds great right now. How about a nap date instead?"

Spelling and grammar change a story's flow

Spelling and grammar change a story's flow. stories with "texting language," for me, personally, are a lot harder to read than if words were spelled out and used correctly. Stories are like songs. If a song doesn't have a good flow, you won't listen to it. So why read a story without a nice flow?
