The frigid air swept through the town and whistled a high pitched howl. The sound was threatening, a warning perhaps. Northville has never heard nature in distress. The picture perfect town hardly ever saw heavy rain even, So to see the elements groan and whine made some residents uneasy. But at this very moment, as the wind knocked angrily on the resident's doors, and the leaves swirled around, dancing madly to an unheard melody, Everyone knew. A feeling bloomed deep inside them, The feeling that their town was no more the serene sanctuary it used to be.
Luna was one of the first to notice these changes. It had been as if a dreamy spell have been lifted off her family, and the gates of reality flooded in to meet the void of peacefulness. Her father had drank bottle after bottle of booze, like he had used to do back in New York. Mother had begun to cry, a deep, ugly cry erupting from her throat as the sound shredded through the thin air. Mascara ran down her face, her body slumped to the ground, just barely holding herself together. Luna, however, had been unaffected. She remained the same, minus the tremendous confusion filling her brain. If the town had been silent before, She would not remember, for the air shook with maddening wails, the sound of glass smashing into walls, floors, people. Luna could remember vividly looking down at her parent's state of disrepair at the top of the small stairwell leading to her room. All she could do is sigh and walk back to her sanctuary and rest on her fluffy, princess pink bed and allow her heavy lids to close. Somehow, if by miracle, she managed to tune out the loud noises, but that night dreams eluded her.
The next morning there was an eerie silence. Worry occupied Luna's mind as she rushed downstairs. Sure enough, the house was a mess. Broken electronics, shattered booze bottles, and various other unrecognizable objects cluttered every surface imaginable. Her mother was slumped against a wall with her makeup stained in tear lines down her face. Luna crouched and took her pulse. She appeared to be alive. This was confirmed when her head rolled slightly and her eyelids cracked open, revealing a beautiful blue. Luna felt relieved, but did not indicate so. Instead, she smiled warmly.
"ruined makeup is not fit for a socialite." Luna bantered lightly to hopefully cheer up her mother. Luna's mother's eye squinted and her head tilted in confusion as her eyes swept the house.
"Now, Now, your father would not approve of such a title." She said in a soft hoarse voice. Her mind could not grasp an explanation for what she was seeing, but she knew that her daughter would truthfully tell her later on if she were to ask. However, she instantly knew that asking in the very moment wasn't an option. She had saw the beer bottles.
"Luna, please go check on your father."
Luna gulped and reluctantly nodded as she tugged her baby blue long sleeves further down her arm. Her mother was never aware of the various old bruises on her body left by her father, or some of the old red lines adorning the smooth skin, and Luna never made a point to bring it up. She gritted her teeth, rose to her feet and carefully walked over shards of glass until she found her father laying on the floor. In that instant, when her eyes locked onto the gruesome sight, time froze.
