Who knew that this would be the day Resa Miller would see such unimaginable events. "Hey Rufus," Resa called, "how about we go play catch in the park, it's been a while?" He started to jump and was wagging his tail as the crisp air blew through his shiny, golden mane. The two ran out of the house, rushing past everyone that was in their way.At the park Resa stood firm, taking in the cool breeze as it ruffled her red hair and caressed her freckled face. Rufus ran, wagging its tail, waiting on the Frisbee to be thrown. They spent at least 3 full hours running back and forth, catching and returning the Frisbee the way a dog and its owner would.
"Okay Rufus, last throw and then we're heading home!" she shouted. Resa hurled the Frisbee until it was out of sight, then quickly ran after Rufus as he chased it. Searching between the bushes, it was difficult to spot the colorful toy until she noticed it on a nearby fence.
Behind the fence, there was a dilapidated shack that had torn white drapes in the windows and a broken down door that swung on its hinges. The ambiance was eerie and Resa's interest was peaked. She'd never noticed the shack before, and now, it seemed like an adventure.
"I don't know what it is, Rufus, but I don't think anyone lives there." Resa insisted. Soon enough she was at the door, peeking in through the open area before she bravely slipped into the house with her K9 by her side.
Calling loudly while walking through the cabin, she heard nothing but the creaks of the door hinges at the front and the floorboards beneath her feet. There was a door that was close to her that she believed was the bedroom. She called out again to see if anyone was there before she went in but when she opened the door, to her surprise the bedroom was in mint condition. Sheets perfectly folded, pillows fluffed and placed correctly and everything in its rightful place, except for the abandoned shoe in the middle of the floor.
She went over to move the shoe and hopefully find its place, but, just like the saying goes, curiosity killed the cat. Resa should've never touched the shoe.
All of a sudden the room started to rumble and spin. Resa quickly grabbed onto Rufus as the dog whimpered near her legs. She was scared the old wooden floors would cave in and that they would be sucked in. She clung to the bedpost with her free hand. What the hell was going on? Rufus was howling, Resa's legs shook in fear; all she could do was pray with her eyes squeezed tight.
Slowly, the spinning decreased, and her hazel eyes popped open to see what had happened. Everything in the room was still in its original place, and Resa tiptoed over to the window to take a look through the drapes. She saw the same vegetation that was there before and decided it was safe for them to leave. As she went to the front door, Rufus at her side, she pushed the door aside and slipped back out.
On her way home, she thought it was strange that there wasn't anyone around. Compared to the crowd from earlier, it was pretty vacant. Her mind began to dance with thoughts of the spinning room when she heard it, "Wehoo, wehoo, wehoo." Sirens!
"Let's go see what's going on!" she said to Rufus. They got closer to the bank and saw the people at the police barricade.
She listened in to a nearby conversation, "Monkeys. . . rob a bank? Yeah, right!" the man said.
The young woman answered, "They don't know how many of them are in there, but the civilians look terrified!" Animal control was supposedly on its way so the police waited outside to keep people from getting too close.
All of a sudden, there was a loud pop at the right of the building. Everyone hurried over after the initial shock to see what was happening.
There, sat a red mustang with a monkey in the driver's seat waiting for the other monkeys to come out of the bank. Resa watched in awe as four brown longlegged hairy creatures, all wearing sunglasses, exited the bank and jumped into the car.
The monkey who got into the passenger side hit the CD player and turned on Snap's 'I've got the power.' The song blasted through the street and people backed away in horror as the car drove off.
Tires screeched as police cars chased after the Mustang. The people around shuffled around and Resa heard someone say, "Get on." She looked around before feeling Rufus' paw on her foot. "Resa, I said get on my back let's go after them!"
Resa froze, taken back by the fact that her dog was talking, but curiosity won out. She cautiously grabbed his collar and climbed onto his back. The chase continued, the red Mustang, 2 police cars, and Resa on Rufus' back.
Asphalt turned to dirt as the chase continued. Resa, enthralled by what was happening, asked Rufus to go faster. One of the police cars had hit a tree, and the other seemed to be slow down.
Rufus instantly sped up, and as soon as he was close enough to the Mustang, the monkeys started throwing banana peels at him. One by one, Rufus dodged the peels, but one of them hit her in the face and as the monkeys turned to laugh, they missed their turn and their car flew over the cliff.
Rufus wasn't far behind, but no matter how hard he tried to stop, he couldn't.
The sudden fall made Resa jolt awake in a soaking wet nightgown. It was a terrible dream, and as she looked down at Rufus, his quiet moaning with closed eyes, made her wonder if they weren't having the same dream.
