I

I walked down the street, looking at my surroundings carefully. Cars had been parked in obvious bouts of chaos from people trying to flee. The doors of some still open and every now and then I'd check them for keys.

I'm not sure how it got to this point. I had my metal bat firmly gripped in my hand incase of a sudden attack. I listened closely for the horrible sounds of teeth gnashing and the nasty gargling growling sound the turned would make.

Surviving. That's all I could think about. My stomach growled and I sighed. Turning towards the nearest house I went to the back door. I opened it, lightly tapping on the frame incase there was one of the monsters trapped inside.

I soon heard the irregular thump of it coming and its head jerked erratically as it came for me. I could tell it wanted me and not in a good way at all. I stepped to the side quickly as I reared my bat and smashed it into his head. Blood spattered on me, the grass and the stairs but it wasnt enough. I reared back again hitting him one more time as he tried to get me in his grasp.

He hit the ground with a thump and I knew the fight was over. I entered the house cautiously. You never know if one was trapped somewhere. As I made my way to the kitchen I hit the jackpot. I took my bag off my shoulders and loaded up the canned goods I found and opened me one to eat then.

I've no clue where I'm headed but as far as I'm concerned.. there is no where to head to. It's been weeks since I have seen anyone alive. Even when I do, most of the time you cant trust anyone. Its you against the world.

As I sat there eating the cold food in the metal can I could feel myself sink.
Mom.. I miss her so much. She used to hate when I would eat cold food.

" god why don't you heat that up! Weirdo!" She would say to me and shake her head. I would laugh and shove a huge spoonful into my mouth. Its times like that I miss the most.

I wiped my tears that betrayed me and fell from my eyes. I got up from the table and slung my bag over my shoulders , stepping over the corpse that was now sprawled on the ground.

I need to find a car. Maybe if I could start one there would be something on the radio. Any little sign of hope. I headed down the street once more avoiding being seen my any of the dead.

Finally by the grace of god or whoever the hell was watching over me I found one. It wasnt the best but who could complain? It's the damn apocalypse. As i started it, it roared to life. It had half a tank of gas too. I turned on the radio as I drove down the street.

Clicking through the stations I heard nothing but a worldwide emergency broadcast, but as I clicked once more I heard the faint sound of a voice over white noise. It was hard to make out what it said but I finally pieced it together.

"This...is..cdc..safe haven..colorado.. will be searching for survivors.." I rolled my eyes. Yeah right. I haven't seen anyone for weeks. Hell I could probably claim it was months.

The wind was blowing my hair and I swerved every now and then to miss a corpse or something random in the road. I looked down at my clothes realizing just how dirty I was and I probably needed a bath. I put my knee to the wheel keeping the car steady and tightened my pony tail. I grabbed the wheel again as I turned on the curve of the back roads and slowed down as i seen the river off in the distance.

I collected the water, not drinking any yet. I would need to try to sterilize it first. In this world I trust nothing, especially the water. I built a fire and set my metal canteen over it until it came to a boil. The sun started to set and I made my way back to the car, locking the doors, making sure the windows were up and sitting back trying to get some decent sleep before the next journey I would start tomorrow.
