Beside You
New Years Eve, celebration in Time Square with my best friends, it's perfect to ring in the new year. I smiled at myself in the mirror of the hotel room bathroom. I was dressed nice and warm, knowing New York had the same weather as Halifax, though home is much colder.
"Makayla, hurry up." One of my best friends, Jennifer called from the other side of the door.
"One second, Jen." I called out, fixing my long curly brown hair into a messy bun, knowing Brendan hates it like that. Brendan Tokarski is the boy. Not just because I'm in love with him, but because he's gorgeous and everyone in college thinks so. All the guys want to be him, all the girls want to be with him.
I've known him since I was in kindergarden, before that but that was the embarrassing stage. We've really known each other since our mom's gave birth on the same day. January 5th 1988. And that's how we've known each other for so long.
Everyone expects us to be together in the end, but it's very unlikely seeing that Brendan has an on-again off-again girlfriend named, Danielle. She was the one girl I hated for all the times she's treated Brendan badly, including her cheating bouts with her ex boyfriend, Tyler.
I stared into the mirror for one last second, taking in the dark blue strapless dress I wore and breathed deeply. I opened the door and walked out, Jen and
Mary, my other best friend both stopped what they were doing and stared at me. I was self conscious of my body so of course I folded my arms across my chest.
"Ah, she's a girl! We have a girl." Mary screamed hysterically.
All of a sudden we heard someone banging on our room door, "Mary, what's going on?" Pat, Mary's boyfriend and one of Brendan's best friends called from the other side.
She skipped to the door and opened it a little. "Makayla is a girl, she's in a dress." She told him happily.
"Really, let's see." Pat said, all interested now.
"No, you have to wait for the finished product." I laughed as did Jen at the words she had used and then watched her slam the door in his face. "Now, make up time. Not a lot, just a bit." She added at my worried look.
"Just enough to make Brendan kiss the ground you walk on." Jen mumbled under her breath and took her small brush and added blush to my cheeks while Mary grabbed her eyeshadow. I was so worried now.
They took my ipod from my hand and put that on, blasting Down With Webster happily and the three of us sang to the music for over an hour as we got finished getting ready. We still had tears in our eyes from listening to Marianas Trench song 'Beside You,' as always. The nicest song of the year and I had declared it. (AN; Of course I had to add Canadian music bands to this short story. How could I not?)
"We're meeting the guys at the lobby." Jen said when we got in the elevator. "Brendan arrived just fifteen minutes ago from his flight."
They both winked at me and I rolled my eyes at them and leaned my head against the wall and smiled thinking of Brendan. He was the only guy I had ever allowed into my heart and somehow, it hurt knowing I'd never have a chance with him.
I tightened my coat around me and stared at my black Peter Pan boots that were on my feet, two pairs of socks on my feet along with nylons. The elevator stopped and the doors opened. The three of us walked out and I smiled when I saw Brendan staring up at the ceiling with a small box in his hand. I looked away when I saw that Adam had said something to him to make him look our way.
