Song: Far Away
The blade crossed my skin, a solitary tear traced down my cheek and to the base of my throat. The smell of cleaning supplies invaded my nose, a dotted line of red passing through the skin to trail down my wrist. A shudder rocked my body as I flung the red, cracked pocket knife across the small bathroom.
'Far Away' by Nickelback echoes softly from my bed. Reaching up to the sink I pull myself up from the pristine floor. The mirror reflects my broken expression, dried mascara streaks and smudged lipstick take up most of my face. With shaking hands I take out the pins holding my hair up, the frizzy dirty blonde locks fall against my slender neck, blue eyes stare out sadness. Ashamed, I look down at my wrist covered in lacerations, turning on the cold water I hesitantly put my hand out. A hiss escapes my lips as the shocking cold washes away the evidence of my shame.
If only that worked for all wounds.
Without another thought I steeled my expression and left. Stopping briefly to look at the phone screen my lip quivered as Faith's name appeared accompanied by the insistent buzzing of a phone call. Pippy jumped up on the bed with a mew, obsidian eyes searching for treats. With a soft laugh I ruffled his fur, scratching under his head before sitting on the bed. With a shrill meow he curled up inches away, purring. Quickly silencing my phone and throwing it inside my bedstand drawer I closed my eyes, sleep overcoming me faster than I anticipated.
Morning came with a cheerful tone; birds chirping and singing their respective songs as the leaves rustled in the breeze. Prying my eyes open I glanced over at the digital clock.
"7:38 am" A sigh breaks the calm silence as my tired mother stubbles in my room, a frown stretches her chapped lips as she scratches her brown head of hair unconsciously. "May? You're still asleep," She looks me over with slight concern, " and what's with your face?" She yawned. "Nothin' ta worry about ma." I said with a small smile, bringing the comforter up to my chin. "Of course not, you're my good girl." Mother smiles proudly and lifts my chin up with her hand, placing a kiss on my cheek before leaving, no doubt to wake up my sister Anna. A spark of shame inflates my heart at her parting words.
If only you knew mama...
My eyes watered as I took a second to gather myself, only a second before I was up and in the shower. I let the world melt away as the water melted away my worries.
After what seemed like a lifetime I was dressed and ready to head out the door to the bus stop.
Taking a glance toward the floor length mirror I gave myself a once over: hip length hair, black skinny jeans, Vans, and a black top completed the 'Leave me Alone' look. Heavy liner, pink lipstick and white foundation gave me a doll like face.
I guess I looked mildly attractive if you were into that sorta thing, I shouldered my messenger bag and raced down the stairs with only a minute to spare. Grabbing toast from the table I kissed my mother on the forehead and continued out the door. Taking a bite of my breakfast I slowed down to a walk as I got to my friends house.
Walking up the drive I picked up a pebble and through it at her window, brows coming together as I strained to get a good look into her room. "Oí, Tallahassee. Get'ur arse down 'ere right now!" I hollered.
A red head of hair popped out the open window, a body soon following after. "Ahoy there girly!" Talyah chirped with a silly grin as she dropped down from the window panel.
"Hey, now get ur' butt in gear because we're late." I looked down at my watch with a frown. "8:03"
"Very late." She sighs loudly and hooks her thumbs into her shoulder bag's straps. With a nod we start back down her drive and up the lane to 'BlackWell Highschool'. The massive structure spans the length of two football fields, apart from the cheerful "Welcome to BlackWell" sign hanged on the front it looks just like any other building in town; big, dark, and silent. The type of place your depressed just to see. Next week this place will be nothing but a memory.
"Hey Maymay, what do you think of our caps," Talyah says with a small smile, "Pink would've been prettier." Shaking my head I open the door to the 'glass office' and gesture her inside before answering. "I like blue better, or red." I nodded slightly as I thought over my choice before walking up to the desk. "We need hall passes; one for Mr. Kings and one for Mrs. Dayton." Ms. Linda kindly smiled before typing something in her computer. After a moment she opened a drawer and pulled out two small slips of paper.
"Thank you," Talyah said as she took them. Taking my respective slip I waved as we turned down separate halls. The moment I was alone the smile dropped from my face, quickly entering my homeroom I gave Mr. King a sheepish smile as he took my pass before sitting down in the nearest open seat. Sadly, said seat happened to be in front of Ellis Baler. Who in my opinion really needed to grow up. "Blondie! Come here often?" Ellis, or Eli, smiled broadly with a catty wink. "Only every day, Eli." I retorted with a heavy scottish accent that never escaped the other students.
"So we still on for Friday dove?" He stated more than asked as he leaned over my shoulder.
With a sigh I nodded. He really didn't look that bad, in that boy-next-door kinda way. Slightly curly brown locks framed a nice forehead and green eyes stared out gently from a lush brown forest. More sport inclined than anything the common Ellis Baler could be spotted with his signature letterman jacket. Always.
The stocky football player had been one constant in my life. Albet a unwelcome one.
As the mathematics continued to pile on my focus wondered to other unimportant things. Like the way Marisa doodled in her notebook religious, and Blake snoring loudly as Mr. King went on and on about algebraic expressions and the powers property.
The simple things nobody really cares about that makes our everyday life ring with simplicity.
