In all of us, there is a damage to be fixed in our hearts.
In some, it may not be possible to fix.
Perhaps, that was the case with Yoongi.
There has always been a damage since he was in high school. A damage so big he was ready to take it to the grave.
It started at the young age of 14.
A rejection.
It was hard, for sure. No, it was not a rejection from a girl. Not a rejection from a bad grade, but something that felt worse than he imagined.
A rejection from his parents.
He'd been prepared for it. He told himself that this would happen. He'd accepted it.
However, for some reason, Yoongi felt worse than he'd predicted. He felt a pressure constrict his lungs, and yet he felt so impossibly empty inside at the same time. Like never before, he felt like hiding in the small corner of his closet and shutting himself off from the rest of the world. His parents would only get more upset if he did such a thing, so he did what anyone else would do in his situation - hide it.
From then on, he'd went to school with a blank face on, and returned home with the exact same one. He stopped talking to everybody, fearing any bad outcomes. Eventually, all of his friends left, no longer satisfied with this unfamiliar Yoongi. He always felt guilty, tired, useless, and he could never sleep. It was an endless loop, on and on. The choice between music and family, left undecided. Hiding the conflict behind his several façades became a second nature to Yoongi, and by his second year of high school, it didn't feel any different from his normal self.
His parents got suspicious. He had taken a complete 360º in terms of behaviour, and apparently, they cared enough to take him to a psychologist. He was diagnosed with depression, and his parents alienated him. Said they didn't understand him anymore. He didn't understand himself either. Would anyone ever understand? The doctor asked him too many questions, each of them replied to by Yoongi with similar nonchalant answers. Yoongi was pretty sure the doctor gave up on him the first time they met.
He didn't know why he expected any change. Things went back to how they were before the appointment. The loop continued. As time passed, Yoongi slowly lost any hope for a change in his life. He was prepared to live his life like any other mindless child who obeyed their parents. Playing piano, like a good child. No rough rapping. None of that unsightly activity in the Min household.
When he finally chose to pursue his music, Yoongi felt impossibly more empty than before. Of course, he was happy. He was free from all of constraints he used to struggle against. Again, he wonders why. Why did he feel so bad? Perhaps it was due to the millions of possibilities he had left behind when he chose music.
But with the millions of possibilities he had left behind, millions of new possibilities were created. For the first time, Yoongi had a change. It wasn't a loop anymore. Different things happened every day, as he took more control in his life. No longer in the clutches of his parents, Yoongi found himself smiling for real for the first time. He was cheated out of his money time and time again, had to make the choice between a meal and a bus ride; but amongst the chaos, he found himself secretly enjoying the simple pleasures of life.
The second time he made a big change in his life, was the time he auditioned. When he was accepted, he didn't think much of it. He'd just be another trainee that didn't debut. He first met Seokjin and Namjoon, and soon enough, the others joined as well. Yoongi found himself strangely moved by their determination.
Slowly, each member wiggled their way into his damaged heart.
Namjoon, who had thoughtfully taken care of the team as they neared debut, and eased their pressure after debut. Many people would take this kind of affection for granted, but Yoongi knew better. Being deprived of such care for years, he was thankful for everything Namjoon did for him. Anyone could tell that he wasn't very talkative at times, and he preferred to keep it that way. Namjoon could tell exactly when he didn't want to talk. However, when he did, Namjoon listened more carefully to him than anyone Yoongi had ever met. For a person that young, Namjoon was extremely wise and still kept humble while giving advice. That was probably the aspect Yoongi was most thankful for.
Seokjin, who often made the worst puns Yoongi had ever heard, but had a cheerful laugh that could lighten his mood any time. His slightly parental role in the group kept everybody in check, including Yoongi. Whenever he felt homesick, Seokjin's cooking eased the nervous tightness in his chest. Yoongi found himself going a bit softer around him, and he let himself relax a bit. No matter how many times he jokingly ignored Seokjin, he would always come back around to tell his bad jokes and laugh at them.
Hoseok, who often acted a bit strange. Yoongi would never suspect that he would befriend such a person. Hoseok was the exact opposite of him - a hyper, child-like man who would actually laugh at Seokjin's jokes. However, he found himself doing the same thing. He became soft around Hoseok, and often joined him in his little pranks and jokes. Once, Hoseok said something so cheesy yet touching, that Yoongi feared he would actually cry. "You know," He said. "I'll always be right around the corner if you need someone to talk or cry to. Right, Yoongi hyung?" That night, Yoongi went to bed with a strange warmth in his chest.
Jimin, whose smile always made Yoongi want to smile back. His eyes that turned into crescents because of his cute cheeks never failed to cheer Yoongi up. He laughed at anything, even Seokjin's bad puns, and Yoongi never understood why. However, that didn't mean it didn't make him smile. His rare cuddly moments, he found himself clinging slightly to Jimin, and since then, Yoongi found comfort in simply sitting beside him pressing his side tightly towards him.
Taehyung, who seemed weird at first, but at times, could be strangely quiet. At first, Yoongi didn't know how to approach him. Slightly odd and hyper, he didn't quite know how to talk. However, as they were consistently grouped together in games, Yoongi warmed up to the younger easily, and was thankful that Taehyung didn't try to talk too often. He would quietly hold his hand, and his cute boxy smile came to be a favourite of Yoongi's. Just like that, team RoJul was born.
Jungkook, the talented boy who seemed untouchable. Honestly, the boy was intimidating to Yoongi. But as they matured together, he saw him get excited like a little child, and he found Jungkook surprisingly vulnerable at rare times. Realizing that he was just like the others, Yoongi no longer felt like he was untouchable, and gave him warm treatment just like the others. At one point, he even found himself sitting on Jungkook's lap.
Every day was different, and Yoongi found himself wondering what the next day would bring. Thanks to his members that had gradually become his new family, he experienced normal things he would have never found exciting, but with company. Just those simple things made Yoongi so thrilled.
They went through difficulties together, and Yoongi didn't feel alone anymore.
Yoongi no longer felt the dreaded greed he used to feel.
Just years ago, Yoongi was performing in front of two people. Now, here he stood, the entire audience of Tokyo Dome in his vision. He had made it. No longer days where he had to find a disgusting public space to sleep.
He was in the center stage showing thousands of people the one thing that had once been the thing that suppressed him the most. Pursuing the one childhood goal that he hadn't dared to pursue for the longest time. Old abandoned childhood piano, right by his side. His beloved members, waiting for him right behind the curtains. He didn't need anything else. For the first time, Yoongi felt unstoppable, and most importantly, complete.
He made it.
He made it, six others by his side.
In all of us, there is a damage to be fixed in our hearts.
In some, it may not be possible to fix.
However, it can be filled with the affection, attention, and care of others.
Perhaps, that was the case with Yoongi.
