"the only promise I made to you was to do my job. I'm a journalist. that's all I ever promised I'd be."

Penelope Chambers is a New York Times journalist dissatisfied that she has become just another victim to sexism in the workplace as she watches her male coworkers get the big headings while she is stuck with ones that refuse to drive her ambition. She finally thinks she has a story that will set her apart from the men that see as her as inferior, the story about the newly popular and impossibly controversial young author named Styles who refuses to do an interview despite his vocal opinions, but she runs into complications that bring her to the understanding that not even the newspaper can be understood so easily as black and white.
