As I worriedly take the stairs down I'm at locker-heads with myself.
Do I take the money from my concert stash? Or maybe I can just take it back?
Our mother could turn up any day now and I won't have to be forced with this decision?I almost laugh at the likelihood of that happening. Before I can say a word my best friend gives me a look as she closes the fridge door. Gulp.
"There's stuff in the car, don't worry munchkin just eat on our way." She rakes her hand through his hair to which he nods and legs it to his seat.
I'm about to tell her an excuse about forgetting to go shopping or accidentally unplugging the kitchen when she stops me.
"We'll talk about this later."
All I can do is follow her and sit in silence while I'm in the car. Luke wolfs down a cereal bar and juice packet in a blink of an eyes so I give him the cereal bar brought for me.
He takes it without a second thought and I smile. Maybe when I turn 18 I can take him with me.
Nat sighs and opens the glove compartment in front of me. Sweets and small packets in different colours covering the snack spectrum almost burst out. Before I can question her on why she'd need this secret stash she tells me to take something.
Not wanting to argue I grab a 'breakfast biscuit' and place it in my bag, knowing I had a way to go before I felt seriously starving.
I see my best friends hands grip tighter onto the steering wheel.
"How long do we have?" I ask, realising how quiet it has been.
"Don't worry I'll drop you off at the front gate and find a parking spot towards town. I'm pretty sure I have a spare doctors note I can forge somewhere so I'll meet you at break."
In her shades she comes off as Uber-cool and carefree but I know it's only a matter of time before she blows, I can sense there's something bubbling just under the surface.
"Thanks babe I really appreciate it." I feign indifference. "We have food tech after lunch don't we?" I ask knowing full well we do.
When I'd chosen to do cooking as a GCSE I'd forgotten the key part of having to bring in ingredients.
I tried to not make it obvious that I couldn't afford the subject by bringing in scraps from home and basically making dinner during class mixed in with a few sick bay visits.Natalie had decided to join me, probably thinking the class would be a breeze and forgetting the main cooking component.
This was a girl that had managed to set pasta on fire.
"Yup. What are you making? We have free reign today don't we?" She asked.
"Yeah Mrs Wallace can barely get her lesson plans together since she started showing... but I'm not too sure I can be bothered." I try to laugh."The kids in my class say she looks like a whale when she sleeps."
I turn to look at Luke.
"What do you mean when she sleeps? How would they know that?" I question worried she might be loosing it and falling asleep during practicals with year 7s." I dunno, I think they hang outside her office during breaks." He shrugs while I let out a relieved breath.
"How comes you think? Don't you hang out with them too?" I ask, worried how he's settling in.
He shrugs again and looks out the window. That's when I know I've lost him.
Nat taps my shoulder. "We're nearby, get your stuff ready I don't need to be spotted by the demons by the gate."
I nod and ready my stuff. Making sure Luke has everything I look him in the eye and gesture to get out.
"Thanks Nat Cat I'll see you later, okay?" I shout as I climb out and grab Luke to push through the gates before they close.
I avoid the heads of Year and salute my brother jokingly as we pass his tutor room, remembering the lecture he gave me about embarrassing him on his first day by hugging him.
We split ways and I head towards my first class, PSHE.
I walk in just as the bell goes and make my way over to my table. I'd finished everything due weeks ago go I place my head on the desk and sleep some more.
