They don’t wince or pull back when I roll up their sleeve.
They just stare at all the old, new, and bleeding cuts that are slashed across their arms.
I sigh, and look for the First Aid Kit, finding it, and patching up their arms, even letting them cry when I put rubbing alcohol on it.
When I’m done, I hug them.
“Why?” I ask.
They don’t respond.
“Why.” I demand an answer, but like me when they asked me why I was on the roof, they just wince, and don’t respond.
After that, they don’t talk to me the entire day, we eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner in awkward silence, and the only word they said to me is ‘Night’ when it was time for bed.
I lay awake, upset.
Why are they doing this?
Are they just as sad as I am?
Than a new question forms, that takes me back a little.
Why were they on the roof?
It surprises me as I try to come up with a rushed, but logical reason.
Were they working?
Were they having a barbeque?
Family?
Left something there?
But none of the reasons make sense.
The only logical thing I can think is that they saw me, but I didn’t see anyone outside.
I try to ignore the thing that could be true…
I block it out of my mind like a weed.
They couldn’t have been working, I know for a fact they don’t work here.
They don’t have a grill, and the apartment doesn’t offer public grills, and they wouldn’t do it anyway, being too sanitary to even use a public restroom.
As far as I know, they only have a cousin here, but I didn’t see him, and Eliza hates him.
If they left something there, it must’ve been very tiny.
So I’m left with they saw me...or…
No.
They couldn’t have been.
It’s not true.
I block out all the negative thoughts, and rock myself to sleep.
I wake up with a headache.
What was I thinking last night?
I remember, and groan.
Maybe I should ask them about it…
I bite my lip.
I crawl out of bed and look at the time.
4:34 am.
No wonder it’s still a little dark.
I cross my arms and take a shower.
When I’m out, I comb my hair for once, wincing at the knots that formed because of how long I left it unbrushed.
I finally brush my teeth, after days of not.
I look….okay.
I don’t find myself very attractive.
At exactly 6:00 AM Eliza wakes up. While wondering why they have an alarm set for so early, they take a shower. This time, not spending too much time in there.
They come out and make breakfast, asking me what I wanted. I reply ‘Dunno’ and leave it at that.
When they sit down, I finally ask why they were on the roof.
They just sit in silence.
“Cleaning”
“Cleaning what?”
“Stuff”
“Eliza”
“What?”
“Tell me.”
“No”
“Why?”
“Reasons.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“It answered your question so therefore it is an answer.” They seem annoyed...should I stop…?
For some reason, I don’t.
“Just tell me, please...I’ll tell you why I was on the roof…”
“Fine...I was on the roof...too...do the same thing you were gonna do…”
It hits me when I realize what they mean…
They were gonna…
But why…
“Why…?”
“I had just heard the news my sister did the same...so I thought I might do the same thing she did, and get it over with…”
“Eliza…”
“Look, I’m sorry, okay, just tell me why you were on the roof!” They fake a smile, still trying to be joyful in a time of depression… They were always the optimist.
“Well.... I... “
I explain what had happened that night, and what had led to the roof.
Breaking into tears halfway through.
Than to my surprise...they hold my hand..?
I swear my heart skips a beat.
I hold back blushing, and stare at them confused.
They just smile.
I start to feel tired so I fall asleep on what I think is a pillow but I soon find out it’s Eliza’s shoulder, but it’s too late now, I fall asleep.
A blushing mess.
