I walked into Liten Kaffebar for what seemed like the millionth time for my weekly Sunday coffee date with Avalyn, my best friend. We had been best friends for forever; and even now after going to colleges in different states, living on opposite sides of the city, we both made sure that we got our weekly dosage of Ava and Y/N time.
I took my usual spot, which Astrid now always made sure was clear for Ava and I on Sundays, and immediately pulled out my phone; making myself at home in the cushy brown chair. Astrid brought over both of our usuals, which by now I was sure she made the moment she saw one of us walk in the door. She set them both down on the table in between the matching chairs.
"Ava's a little late this week isn't she"
"I'm sure she just got caught up flirting with her hot neighbor. She's obsessed with him." I said with a chuckle and an eye role. Astrid smiled and turned, beginning to walk back to the counter. "Wait, do you have-" Astrid turned around holding a shaker filled with vanilla powder, a small smirk playing across her face.
"I already put some in yours but i had a feeling you might want a bit more so." she said as she placed the small glass container on the table with a satisfying thud.
"Thank you, you know me to well, maybe we need to find a new coffee shop to torture." She walked back behind the counter as the tinkling sound of the bell above the door ensued. I looked up just briefly to check if it was Ava. Unsurprisingly it wasn't. Despite what Astrid believed, Ava did not have the best reputation for being punctual. I curled back into the cozy chair and once again picked up my phone just as Ava's text tone pinged in my ear.
'hey B, so I can't make it this week but I hope you are okay. We will schedule an extra long coffee date next week so you can catch me up on all the tea. Love you!'
My face fell as I read the message. We had both never missed a coffee date in the past year, and I had even arranged my classes around our coffee dates. Ava had already finished her schooling and had a great job with a ton of flexibility. But I had changed my mind on what I wanted to do with my life one course before I got my degree. So I had transferred to a different college and started over on getting my bachelors. For being only 21, I was pretty accomplished. But with how life was treating me, I felt anything but.
I was just about to set the phone back on the table when Ava's chime once again rang from its speakers. 'Oh, btw, that guy in my building thats super hot just asked me to go to lunch with him!! Wish me luck Babe!'
I rolled my eyes as I dropped my phone on the table, running my fingers through my hair. I sat back in the chair, huffing as I hit the seat back. Looking out the window I felt like the weather perfectly resembled how I felt. Dark gray clouds showing signs of future rain. Dismal and future tears to be spilt. I started sipping on the coffee that was in front of me; glancing every once and awhile at the full coffee cup across from me accompanied with the empty chair.
It seemed like hours had passed as you gazed out the window, at some point I had finished my own coffee and moved on to Ava's. I'd never tried her strange order before but it wasn't half bad. A crash came from behind the counter and I jumped, my head snapping at the sound, my nerves nerves on end, crackling like static. Astrid had only dropped a couple of metal bowls, but it lead to my eyes meeting a pair of honey chestnut brown eyes across the room. A tall guy sat at a table on his own, a closed computer, three notebooks, a pencil was tucked behind his ear, another held in his hand which he was twiddling between his fingers, and several crumpled up balls of paper were strewn on top of the notebooks, computer and chairs. His dark brown hair was tossled and askew; his dark grey shirt wrinkled as if it had been shoved in a suitcase. His shirt was paired with a black denim jacket draped across the chair behind him, a pair of black skinny jeans and black hightop converse. His eyes seemed like they were staring into her soul, and I didn't like it.
I turned away, squirming at the feeling those piercing eyes gave me. I turned back towards the window, the warm cup of coffee heating up my hands. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a shadow sit down in Ava's empty chair. I looked up to see the young man from across the room sitting down in front of me.
"Hi," he said with a slight smirk playing across his pale pink lips.
"Hey..." I replied a little confused as to why he had chosen to sit across from me. An average looking girl in a coffee shop who he'd locked eyes with for probably only a second. He was holding one of his notebooks in his hands.
"Is it alright if I work here? It's kind of lonely working on my own, plus I could use some help if you aren't busy." He asked, a questioning and slightly needy look in his eye. She new that look all too well, it came from someone who was scared to be alone, she had given that same look all to many times.
"Sure, no harm I guess."
"Thanks." He said with a sweet smile on his lips as he tilted his head down looking at her with doe eyes. I turned back to look out the window gazing at the dreary overcast sky. "You aren't any good at English or Music are you?"
"Actually yeah... I was studying to be an English major last year and am now Im studying to be a music teacher. So yeah, I know a little." I said as I looked at him with a little bit of a smug smile and a sarcastic look in my eye.
"Wait really? That's perfect! I'm trying to write a song and I'm stuck on some of the lyrics."
"Well, let me take a look I guess." I said holding out my hand for the journal held tightly in his hands. He faltered for a second, seeming unsure as wether or not to let her into this part of his life. "don't worry I'm just helping you with song lyrics, not reading your diary and sending it to the entire world." He looked down at the note book, chuckling to himself a little bit.
"Music is kind of my diary, but you're right." he said as he slowly handed it over. Written down were only a couple of lines but they made her blush all the same.
I saw you on a Sunday in a café
And all you did was look my way
And my heart started to race
And my hands started to shake
I get a little bit nervous around you
Get a little bit stressed out when I think about you
Get a little excited
Baby, when I think about you, yeah
Get a little self-conscious
When I think about you
Yeah, when I think about you, babe
At the very bottom of the page he had clearly written his phone number. She looked up at him and smiled
"I like it. I'm Y/N by the way." I said as I tore the corner off of the page taking the pencil from his hand and writing down my own number. I held my number out to him with a bit of a flirtatious smile caressing my lips.
"I'm Shawn, Shawn Mendes."
